Located in the heart of Haute-Saone, in the village of Ray-sur-Saone, labelled "Cite de caractere de Bourgogne-France-Comte, the estate of Ray castle is erected on a rocky outcrop at the edge of a plateau overlooking the meandering river some 50 meters below. The whole estate comprising the castle, the park and the farmstead, is entirely protected as being part of the French National Heritage (monument historique). This estate became part of the Department's patrimony thanks to the exceptional donation by Diane de Salverte, last heir to a lineage of 900 years of uninterrupted transmission within the same family. Overlooking the Saone river, which gave its name to the Department "Upper Saone", the castle is an iconic representation of the territory. From May till June, the chateau de Ray is open every saturday, sunday and bank holiday, for guided tour at 2:30 pm and 4:15 pm. Registration is compulsory for individual visitors and groups.
