We enjoy the view from the overlooks to the Wisconsin and Mississippi river junction. There is a nice hiking trail along the bluff. It can be steep and slippery in places. It is just a day trip for me but there is camping and other activates available . It is a state park so there is a fee to enter. It has a small concession and gift shop so you can get a souvenir if desired. There is a boat landing available. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. Nice for bird watching. I enjoy seeing the vultures soar out in front and below the bluffs.

This park sits atop the bluff named Pikes Peak. The picnic grounds are well groomed and the sights from the overlook are superior. You stand above the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers.
Many trails lead to other overlooks and a substantial group of Indian mounds. Trails on steep slopes near the primary overlook are all constructed wooden steps and walkways.
The campground is inexpensive but poorly laid out with sites almost on top of each other. Most sites have electricity hookups but are not particularly level. Restrooms are clean and include showers.
Straight down the bluff is a mainline railway and you can hear the rumble and whistle all night.

Bring binoculars & a sense of fun for this short adventure across the river, or in our case, lawn chairs & refreshments for an easy sunset "out & back." No reservations needed but check the website so you understand how it works.
Two caveats:
1) Cash only. No phone money or plastic.
2) Bear in mind, if you're not in a vehicle, you are be exposed to the elements.
Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles hunting high above the water & bluffs. Also, be sure to watch what happens to the wheelhouse when you go back across the river. Staff is friendly & informative.
During summer months check the Cassville town website or ask locals about the monthly two hour sunset cruise on the river~byo beverages. The ferry docks in a park near Cassville's downtown. On the Iowa side, Promise Land Winery offers a wagon ride on some Sundays so walk-on ferry riders can spend the afternoon sipping on the bluffs, listening to live music. Otherwise, it's a quiet 2 mile walk on a sunny gravel road.
A quick crossing saves miles & is easy on the wallet. Some ferries nickle & dime fares, but not here--vehicle fares include people, so for example two people on a motorcycle is 1 motorcycle fare (not motorcycle + 2 people).

I have been to Lock 10 many times in recent times. The tow boats do not travel the river in the winter nor at times of low water. You need to plan a visit during the summer when the boats are hauling grain or other bulk materials in barges. I love to see the boats at night with the big search lights are scanning the shore line. I like to hear the big engines straining to push or pull barges into the locks. It is easy to sit in River Park and have a clear view of everything that is happening on the river. There is plenty of free parking. You can watch from shore for free. It is cheap entertainment.

My wife and I visited on a warm afternoon in the middle of the summer. There is a lot to see and learn among the grounds of Stonefield and across the road at the former governors dilapidated mansion. We had a group of six that stopped in to sample the Promiseland Wines. We found many very tasty for sure! We happened to be there on a day where the local fire department was having a fund raiser so the staff was very busy, but still found time to let our group sample.
After sampling we purchased some and took the wine outside on the patio to listen to the free music entertainment. With a great fall day, great wines, great friends, and great music our time was enjoyed by all. You will not go wrong stopping at this winery!

It gets buggy and humid here, this is the Mississippi River basin, but the View! The four walk-in sites on the bluff have gorgeous views. Reserve early!
The park is lightly used, bathrooms were cleaned well daily (if they're dirty it's fellow campers' fault). Even during 4th of July week, nearly half the sites were available. Underbrush separates most of the sites, giving a sense of privacy.
There's a beautiful day use/picnic area with stellar views, hiking trails, and one strategically placed bench for sunset watchers. Stonefield Village is just outside the entrance to the park & is worth spending a day. There's also the Anker Inn Smokehouse (serving food Thu-Sun 4-9), Cassville Ferry, tubing on the Grant River, and an inexpensive city pool just minutes from Nelson Dewey. Potosi Brewery is an easy drive on the Great River Road. In other words, plenty of low key amusement.
For no-see-ums try this old river rat trick: vanilla, the cheapest you can find, and keep applying it. It really helps, even if you do smell like cookies.

An OMG shop!!!!You'll find a memory every time and clean ship.The shop is set up like a bunch of shops inside.Everything from Gas and Oil,Signs,Local collectibles, Hunting and Fishing, collectible toys.Eady to spend an hour and still not see it all.
