Museo Casa Diego Rivera

The birthplace of Mexico's most famous painter has been preserved as a museum featuring some of his original works and a collection of artifacts from his house.

Reviewed By SeveBellisteros - Kansas City, United States

I am a big fan of Diego Rivera so I very much enjoyed his home. It is beautifully restored and has several of his early works, which are not in the style for which he is famous. I would read about him in advance of going as the signage. /story telling is minimal.

Museo Iconografico del Quijote

This museum is dedicated to the story of Don Quixote and displays statues, murals and other depictions of this famous literary figure.

My wife and I loved this museum. Imagine, an entire museum dedicated to the mythical exploits of a fictional character. This might seem absurd, but then you visit the museum and the genius of the place reveals itself. The many galleries contain lovely works of art depicting the improbable events in the lives of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and scholarly books about the author, Don Miguel de Cervantes, and his world-famous book. My wife and I loved this place. In fact, we visited twice in our five-day stay.

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Primer Deposito

Reviewed By pscottbrown - Portland, United States

Also called the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. This is not really a museum in the traditional sense—it's a private gallery devoted to the works of an artist and his friends. As such, you really have to think of it as an art installation. The artist behind Primer Deposito is Capelo (Javier de Jesús Hernández Martínez). He might be Guanajuato's best artist. In one room of the gallery you will find many fine, traditional ceramic pieces for home use. This is his commercial work, made in a fabrica just outside the city. The rest of the museo is devoted to his personal work, and it changes over time. On our most recent visit, one room was devoted to life-size horse heads in clay space so close together than you have to pay attention to where you walk. Another room had large abstract ceramic statues. Also on display were bronzes and wall-size ceramic "paintings." Capelo's work is filled with details and layers—the more you look the more you will see. However, don't expect anyone to tell you what any of it means. For 15 pesos admission, you have to do that work for yourself.

Museo Conde Rul

Reviewed By Mike5466

Inaugurated only in March 2018, this is the newest museum in Guanajuato and it is well worth visiting. Mansion built in 1802 transformed into museum/art gallery, both historic and contemporary. Well maintained and very low price ($1.25 USD) it is worth about an hour of your time... Part of the historical lore says that the wife of the owner, (Count Rul who was known for his many love affairs with other women), kept using the back door to go in/out of the building to avoid the jokes of the people.
