One of our winery tasting visits, during our tour, was Berton Vineyards in Yenda, founded by a married couple, Bob and Cherie Berton. Our host was an enthusiastic, lovely young lady Lee, who welcomed us upon arrival and to be seated at their large table for comfort and enjoy and appreciate our wine tasting experience. The ambience of the place is spacious and vibrant, with their wines proudly on display along the walls. Once seated, Lee didn’t waste time to share us the history of Berton Vineyards, where she explained that Bob and Cherie decided to have a life changing experience, moved from Hunter Valley to High Eden and called it their home. Both clueless in the vineyard industry, they gave it a go, regardless. Only to discover that it was a fail but not totally, their vineyard didn’t grow to their full length but there was potential. That’s how they came about in labelling one of their wines ‘Bonsai’ Shiraz, which is a success today. The couple didn’t quit, they persevered and embraced their challenges and turned their negatives into a positive, prosperous future and a story to tell. Having had first-hand experience of challenges, they are not afraid to test their boundaries in winemaking. Lee shared with us their ranges of fine wines, and was generous with the wine tasting. I would guarantee, that you will find at least one or more wine that would suit your palate – even the fussy ones. I found their wine to be classy, fun and exciting, I can see that the young generation would totally enjoy Berton’s selection of wines. However, in my opinion, what stood out the most and very pleasurable was their ‘Reserve Riverina Botrytis Semillon’. This is a sure winner for parties, nice, light and sweet, that will go great with cheese platters and desserts, or simply on its own, when you wind down for the evening, on a hot summer’s day for a casual, cold, refreshing drink. You also have the opportunity to purchase their wines on their premises, I found their wines to be of an affordable price. I thoroughly recommend Berton Vineyards for those who would love to taste wines of various styles with a hint of ‘daring to be fun’. Thank you Lee for a fun, wine experience.
