What to do and see in Grand Isle, United States: The Best Places and Tips

January 5, 2018 Alice Mieles

Louisiana natives treasure a day at the beach on the barrier island known as Grand Isle, just a short drive from the city. Known for its great fishing spots and even deep-sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, at the Grand Isle State Park you can camp or just spend the day picnicking. This tiny sea-side town hosts the Cajun Rodeo, which draws 15 times its normal population annually. Besides fishing, Grand Isle is also known for its birding trails which consists of nearly 60 acres of marsh and Chenier forest habitat and the hosting of The Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival – an annual three-day event.

We had 14 people to Grand Isle ... 7 dads and sons... and Capt Danny Wray did a FANTASTIC job! He coordinated 4 boats for our group, met us at the house when we arrived, and maintained excellent communication throughout the entire trip. The fishing was truly awesome! I have fished in Venice many times, and this was my first trip to Grand Isle... it exceeded my expectations! If you are going to Grand Isle... you must call Danny Wray!

Grand Isle State Park

A choice spot for campers, picnickers, boaters and photographers, the main attraction at this state-owned park and beach is fishing.

A nice place on weekdays, but crowded and noisy during the weekend. Sites are very close together with no privacy. One walking path that is muddy and flooded in places. A long beach . Because of the dune you can't actually see the ocean from the campground but there is easy access. Nice clean restrooms, showers and laundry. Since so many of us must travel with our dogs, it was disappointing that none of tbe beach area permitted dogs. Our dog loves the waves and I think it would be easy to reserve a section of the beach for dogs. I fully understand not everyone wants dogs on the beach, but there's probably more than a half mile of beach in the park - 200 yards of it could be open to dogs without negatively affecting others.

My friends and I had an opportunity to fish with the "Young Guns" Bradley and Hall of Fish Commander September 2014. We expressed to them that our goal was to catch some Tuna, and these guys did NOT disappoint! After an absolutely incredible ride out into the gulf, it was non stop action from lines out to lines in. These guys are definitely dialed into this amazing fishery and their knowledge showed through as we boated numerous Blackfin and three very nice Yellowfin tuna. I highly recommend giving these guys a call if tuna fishing in the Gulf is on your bucket list. Thanks again guys, we'll be seeing you again, REEL soon!

Winter fishing can be tough here but my wife and I booked Reel Screamers Guide Service, January 21, 2015 for an in-shore trip and had a ball. Great catch, redfish, speckled trout and sheep head and learned a great deal about this type of fishing and about this part of beautiful Louisiana. This was courtesy of Captain Daryl Carpenter. He is a great guy to spend a day on the water with, knowledgeable, patient and a very skilled fisherman. We have done lots of in-shore fishing on the Gulf, guided and on our own and this Captain is the very best of many. Highly recommend this trip.

We had lunch here and sat at the mostly empty bar. The bartender/server was attentive but didn't attempt to interact with us. We had burgers and crinkle-cut fries. The food was satisfactory but not memorable. The facility is huge with a big outside deck that probably accommodates huge crowds during peak season. There are slot machines in the bar area and the namesake of the place sat there playing them without ever turning around. The best thing about our meal was the Abita draft.

He is very knowledgeable of the surrounding areas and the types of fish and other wildlife that made the trip so interesting. Throughout the trip he was more than accommodating and friendly that it made our trip so relaxing.
