October 9, 2021 Concepcion Newsome

Welcoming, tolerant Gran Canaria offers a little something for everyone. Families flock to the water parks and beaches of Puerto Rico. Those seeking peaceful escape scamper to Mogan's quiet fishing villages. Gay visitors crowd the bars, restaurants and beaches of Playa del Ingles. Urban attractions are on offer in Las Palmas. Three highways open up the island for those with a rental car or a bus schedule. Prime sites to visit include Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Arucas and Palmalitos zoo park.

This is such a wonderful tour run by Juanjo and Ines (& Lopita) and we recommend it 100%! We arranged to be collected from our hotel in San Agustin at 9am - a spacious and comfortable van with air conditioning. Seats are arranged in two rows of 3. En route, we were given an enthusiastic talk about the history and archeology of Gran Canaria - so much detail and love for this gorgeous island. We were treated to great music, informative videos and stories of legends! We were back around 6pm. The roads are incredible - hairpin bends winding up steep mountains rewarding us with stunning views of ancient volcanoes, rock formations and scenery which could be dry and relatively barren to forested and farmed, (depending on whether we were North or South). Well done, Juanjo for your skilful driving, not made any easier by the numbers of cyclists you had to negotiate too! We stopped at little museums overlooking breathtaking valleys, cave houses, viewpoints and then there was a small feast ALL made by Ines - absolutely delicious Canarian treats, washed down with a choice of water, soft drinks, beer or wine and something special from the Magic Backpack! After lunch and more beautiful sites, we had a coffee stop then to the amazing fortress and ancient caves with remnants of carvings and symbols. Spectacular views. This was the final point on our journey where the Magic Backpack rewarded us with one more treat to end a superb day. Thank you for a brilliant day! If you want an intimate tour of GC run by a couple who ooze love and passion for this incredible island, then BOOK THIS TOUR!

I went on the Lazy Wednesday tour of Gran Canaria in February. I booked it at the tourist information place in Santa Catalina park Las Palmas. I spent a week in Gran Canaria (Las Palmas) and this trip was easily the most fun, informative, and interesting thing I did. And it was inexpensive. Not only did we go to many scenic places (the whole island), but the tour guide Pavel is superb. He's well prepared so you don't waste your time - he took meal orders on the bus and phoned them in, and even served meals in the restaurant to speed things up. And he's really entertaining and informative, there are no times when you just sit on the bus and do nothing. The tour is in English and Spanish, and one smart thing he does is switch between them frequently so you're never waiting long for the English part (Spanish is not one of the languages I speak). There are frequent stops so you never spend a long time on the bus. The roads and buses are such that there's no way I could have done the trip by myself, and thankfully I didn't. Pavel should give tour guide lessons on how to do a great job, it's rare that one finds a guide of his talent. I also took a day tour of Tenerife, and although it wasn't bad, the guide wasn't nearly as good - he droned on and on in one language before switching and he seemed bored. It was a good contrast between the two day-trips. If you can only do one, take the Lazy Wednesday one. This tour is a bargain at double the price, you won't regret going.

If you are looking for a more personal and higher quality experience than the large bus commercial tours, the team at Sky Rebels is it. They were fun, friendly and knew the local history of Gran Canaria. Throughout my day trip with them, they answered any question I had and clearly enjoyed showing me their island and culture. The picnic lunch used all local ingredients and was very tasty. They paced the hike up to Roque Nublo very well, with each stop being a perfect chance to point out more history, geology or just an awesome view. Really enjoyable day.
