Walhalla is a historic gold mining town. The buildings are all authentic to the late 1800s era, though some are rebuilt in the style after being burnt down, as Walhalla has had many fires. There is abundant historic signage providing both narrative and photographs. The Post office museum is worth inspecting too, for the cost of a donation. The tramway walk above the town offers nice scenic views. Quite a few steps to get to it but it’s fairly flat once you get there and an easy walk. It’s also the beginning of the great alpine walking track that can be followed all the way to Canberra. The walk is as long as you want or as short as 400 metres between stepcases at either end of town. The fire station is unique as it’s built across a creek due to lack of flat ground in the valley. The Chinese gardens site is on the edge of town but nothing much to see as it’s now a camping ground. The walk up to the mountain top cricket ground is a bit steep and continues uphill for 1 km in a zig zag path . Wear sturdy shoes as the path gets very rocky. Take a bat and ball for a hit on the cricket pitch when you get there. Take water, camera, snack, and a hat. There is seating and information boards at intervals on the way up to the oval. Allow more than the 45 minutes return it says it takes unless you are very fit. The uphill is quite strenuous and you will want to spend time at the top as well as reading info boards . I would allow 1.5 hours to do it comfortably .
