Garderhojfortet

Built from 1886 – 1892 for privately collected money, Garderhøjfortet was the most important hinge in the Copenhagen Fortification. The Fort was active from 1892 until 1920. During World War I, 400 soldiers manned the fort during the four years of war. Since Denmark was not occupied during the war, the 400 soldiers experienced a “Sitz Krieg”.The fort’s most precious pearl is the large “Double Canon” with a range of three miles and a weight of 200 tonnes. The fort has been renovated and air-conditioned so it is pleasant to reside into the fort.Experimentarium – the famous Danish Science Centre – has developed a very active hands-on, minds-on exhibition which brings the visitors back to 1914. The visitors can experience how the soldiers exercised to keep their body fit, how the soldiers longed for their loved ones (expressed in letters), how the fort communicated (via Morse) to the others forts in the Fortification, how they cooked and how they slept (24 soldiers on 12 m2!!). Also, the visitors can arm a copy of the “Double Canon” and try to hit a target in the area north of Copenhagen.Experiencing the exhibition, you really get the feeling of how it was 100 years ago to be a soldier with very little to do and with the constant fear: The enemy is arriving!

Experimentarium

Excellent science museum, everything was hands-on and interactive for children. Really interesting exhibits. The sensory tunnel and film were very good. The kids loved the construction zone and the bubble area. The cafe was nice but very expensive. Entry and transport to the museum was free with our Copenhagen cards.

Ordrupgaard

Odrupgaard is an exclusive art museum with a collection that includes names such as Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Renoir and Hammershoi. Initially, the museum building served as a manor house. You can still sense the atmosphere throughout the old rooms and the park. Additionally, you can experience temporary exhibitions and (on weekends) visit the renowned Danish architect Finn Juhl's house which is a part of the museum. The sculptural extensional adjacent building is designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid. How to get there: Take the S-train to Klampenborg or Lyngby Station, and then take bus 388 to Vilvordevej. It is a 2-minute walk from there to the museum.

Memorial Park

Mindelunden in Ryvangen is the official Danish memorial cemetery for members of the Danish resistance movement who fell during the Second World War. On August 29, 1943 the military area of Ryvangen was occupied by German forces, who then used this location to execute and bury members of the resistance. After the war, 202 bodies were discovered in the area, 94 of these were executed by firing squad. Today it is possible to enter the area where the Danish resistance fighters were shot and see the burial ground where many of them are reinterred. Visitors can also experience several monuments made to honor the Danes who died fighting the occupying power. All this in a very quiet and beautiful prevented park.

A beautiful and peaceful park in memory of the Danes who died in the struggle for freedom during the Second World War. Either as resistance fighters executed by the German occupying forces, or as soldiers in Allied service fell in battle, or as sailors died while sailing in convoy service. Honored be their memory.

Charlottenlund Fort

Reviewed By veensmenon - Charlottenlund, Denmark

Very good service and lovely team. Beach Park is a lovely place to spend time and relax. The cannons and fort moat are lovely to walk past. It is my favourite place to do a quick run or stroll with friends, glass of wine/beer. Treasure cove in the middle of a busy road. :)
