What to do and see in Funen and Islands, Denmark: The Best Historic Sites

July 7, 2021 Agatha Simes

This region is home to 700 miles of coastline and 90 islands, including Fyn, the third largest island in Denmark. Also known as "Funen," this attractive island of thatched farmhouses, myriad beaches, forests, beaches and grassland offers gorgeous Kattegat and Baltic views. The most popular spot is quirky Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, but don't miss Ladby's Viking ship grave, where the remains of a 72-foot longship, burial site of a 10th-century Viking chieftain, have been excavated.

Bregninge Kirkebakke

Bregninge Kirke is a beautifully placed church on the highest point of the South Islands surrounding Svendborg. On a clear day, the view from the hills is very beautiful, incorporating the majority of the islands in the South Baltic. A climb to the top of the church tower is certainly worth the effort- a breathtaking experience indeed. Highly recommended! And of course the cemetery is beautifully kept- tranquility itself.

The Mayor's Yard

The oldest part of the Mayor's Yard (Borgmestergården) is from 1601. The building and its additions house the historical museum in Nyborg. In the cobblestoned courtyard, you will see fine examples of old fire trucks, and the entrance to the smithy is also here. You can eat your bag lunch in the courtyard, too, on the tables and benches there.

Hans Christian Andersens Childhood Home

Andersen recalled his childhood with nostalgic pleasure. From the age of two until he was 14, he grew up in a poor – but also loving – home which provided him with inspiration for many of his fairytales. Come and sense the really special atmosphere of the poet’s spirit in the childhood home. Take a look too at the tiny, fairytale garden.
