There is an admittance fee of 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children. So cheap. The exhibition covers a wide range, form the process of evolution to Japanese local and historic culture, so both adults and children will be able to have a good time there. Its souvenir store is also good. You can buy stone samples, cute stuffed toys, including some strange ones, and boxes of local confectionery.

This park is beautiful and well-maintained. Nothing much to see but if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet stroll, this is the place to go to.
It’s a big park with a huge lake in the middle. Boat rentals were available but it was closed during our time of visit.
There is a small coffee shop just a few feet away from the entrance.

Surprising that this place is not mentioned more widely in tourist guides, as it is one of the better visits in Fukuoka situated about 45 minutes from Hakata Station: Peaceful scenery, a 41m-long reclining statue of the Buddha, with relics of the Buddha and his first disciple Ananda (gifted by Myanmar), boxes containing ashes of over 4,000 people.

As the sunrise is expected to be 7:18 a.m., I took the first subway train from Ohori Koen, the first JR train from Hakata and the first bus from Fukuma to reach there around 6:00 a.m. Though it was cloudy and rainy, I could see the straight road line from the shrine to the sea and imagine the sunset along the road twice a year(one is sometime later October). There are many smaller shrines sitting at the backside of the main shrine. A shrine after a shrine with many red torii gates were a kind of maze and I could not see all of them.

We went there for Shichi-go-san (a festival to pray for the healthy growth of young children) and enjoyed the chrysanthemum show. If you are interested in Japanese flowers, visiting there in this season is highly recommended. Another recommendation is to walk through the road to Takamiya-saijo, the ceremonial place. You can enjoy the mysterious atmosphere and the silence in the forest there.

I came at the best timing when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. There are also plum and peach blossoms along the canal banks. It was a fairly cloudy day and the temperature was around 17 degrees, it was cooling and comfortable.
The hour long boat ride was very enjoyable and serene. It was also very fascinating to see so many types of plants and flowers along the way. The bonus was seeing a snake resting on the branch of a trees, less than a metre away from our boat. Some women on the boat were totally freaked out.
The free shuttle bus provided by the boat company was full load, so do arrive early to ensure that you can board the bus, especially the last bus.
There are four boats company to choose from, so come and shop around first before deciding which one to pick. I chose the one next to the bridge, with rows of cherry blossoms, just because the boat boarding point is so instagram worthy. Hahaha...

Generally a tourist spot; it is present in virtually all brochures covering Fukuoka. The place itself is a shrine to a Japanese deity of learning. Those who want to have a taste of Japanese spirituality may find this a good example of it. The grounds of the shrine itself are beautiful, with Chinese-inspired Bridges and gardens; however, as we visited in winter, there wasn't much foliage to make the scenery especially appealing. Perhaps it would be better to visit the area in times other than winter. Crowds are often present, but they are generally bearable.

In the spring, the Kawachi Fuji Gardens open their Wisteria tunnels to the public. Wisteria, lauded in Japanese poetry, bloom strongest between April and May. The Kawachi Fuji Wisteria are especially lovely, as the hundred-year old trees are arranged to blossom around domes and trellises, with clusters of flowers hang down in delicate rows, leaving only patches of streaming sunlight in between. The magical sight attracts visitors from all over the world. Over twenty species of Wisteria compose the two main tunnels, one 260 feet long, and the other 720 feet long. Each features an explosion of petals from lavender to deep royal purple, with bursts of pink, blue, and white in between.

We visited on 29 April this year. That was the first day of admission at 1,000 yen. We payed 500 yen per person at the entrance gate. Unlike 2016 season, the garden rents car park nearby, probably from an onsen facility. We parked our car and walked to the garden and stayed for 1.5 hours. A little early for the peak, but we enjoyed the bloom. On 1st May, the admission was raised to 1,500 yen. We saw shuttle bus coming and leaving quite often, with nearly full of passengers.

To go to this Park, take a JR train bound for Moji-Kou from Hakata Station and transfer to Kashii line bound for Saitozaki at Kashii Station, and take off at Uminonakamichi Station. Rent a bicycle because the park is really huge and there are so many different bicycles to rent. The park is great for kids to see the animals, birds, and flowers of all kinds. It's a great place to visit with your family.

It's around the back of Temangu Shrine. It's worth going up to see this especially if you are yearning for a little exercise. The place is quiet and devoid of tour groups. The walk up also rewards you with the best display of Sakura if you are lucky.
