We presented ourselves as two people seeking knowledge and were introduced a short time later to Dave. He patiently explained how Union Star made the different cheeses and answered all our questions. Only later did we learn that Dave is a fourth generation owner. He spent a good thirty minutes with just us before we joined a continuous stream of customers making purchases. In the age of impersonal, profit-first businesses, it warmed our hearts to find an old-school company competing with the big boys. Dave, today you won us over with your willingness to impart your knowledge while gently nudging us toward business values that really matter. For that, and your marvelous cheeses, we thank you.

We first became acquainted with Mosquito Hill when they still had their Butterfly House. Unfortunately, the BH was closed Fall of 2014, but there are PLENTY of other things to do there. Then I got involved with their "Serious Snow Shoe Hikes". Described as NOT being a leisurely stroll, these hikes were great exercise. While there for one of the hikes, I saw that MH was hosting a Snow Shoe Race. I'm a runner and a snowshoer, so I figured it couldn't be that hard to do. I picked out my lightest pair of snowshoes and practiced several times before taking on the race. I chose to start with the 1 miler and won my division. I was planning to compete again in 2015, but the races were cancelled for lack of snow. Later in February, MH did offer a torchlight snow shoe walk and it was wonderful! The staff prepared hot cider and chocolate, and had snacks laid out. Really a great group of people!!!
Mosquito Hill also has cross country ski trails separated from the hiking/snowshoeing trails. They rent equipment, so if you want to try out snow shoeing before you buy, it's a great option.
We don't visit as much in the summer as we have other options to explore.

Tom (vineyard master and winemaker) and Holly Boettcher (master gardener) have created a charming vineyard in Hortonville, WI, that is already attracting crowds--even before the first vintage has been offered for sale. While the vines are maturing to their productive stage, Whistler's Knoll is hosting a variety of events that will undoubtedly serve to promote wine culture in Central Wisconsin.
We attended a Mediterranean food and wine pairing comprising 5 courses and 5 wine selections, each of which were truly delicious and well-matched. The food was provided by a local restaurant (Carmella's) and the wines were chosen and introduced by wine expert Holly Weisman. If I lived nearby, I would try to attend all of their events! I am certainly looking forward to trying their own vintage, once it is available. Tom said the grape production this year (2015) should yield a small quantity, and I am confident that Tom will be able to make an admirable wine (I did get to try some wine he made with grapes sourced from elsewhere, and it was excellent).

Drove 45 minutes to enjoy an animal loving day with my daughter but left feeling depressed. Some of the enclosures are sized well but most are quite small. As you can see by the photograph there are sheep in a round enclosure that goes around the big cats enclosure - not sure who that setup benefits. The bear sat at the feeding station looking pretty helpless as he waited on the next person to walk by with "bear mix." The mix we purchased consisted of macadamia nuts, cereal pieces and fruit snacks. The petting zoo had two Jack Russells that live there, seemed odd for dogs to live in a small pen, the worker said the dogs don't go home with anyone at night. Also in the petting zoo "hut" was a baby cavy in a small crate (honestly not sure if it's good or bad to keep them from adults) but this poor little one was chewing it's cage door and quite jumpy. Animal Haven did a great job on the building when you enter - store, bathrooms, food, quarter games, video games - they just seemed to forget that money could've (and from the looks of it, should've) gone to the animals and their enclosures.

Our first time here as we were visiting friends in Weyauwega & they wanted to take us to their favorite bar/restaurant which is located right on the Wolf River in a very close by town of Fremont. The place was packed with people, many of them friends of our friends. Had a great menu with dinner-type meals as well as hot, grilled sandwiches .Great food & a great location.

Occasion: Annual adult camping weekend for couples and singles (12-15 people, age range 25-50)
Campground: Crowded, but facilities (bathroom/shower... and sites) probably one of the cleanest I've ever seen for a campground. Pleasantly surprised considering the amount of partying that goes on here. Kudos to the staff.
Atmosphere: The weekends are packed with families (young children) and young singles... all age groups. I'm not a parent, but if I was I don't think I would bring my young children on the weekend, maybe during the week. Had a great time with the group of adults we were with.
River/Float: Water shallow (1.5-3 ft.) a little dirty. Initial entrance area smelled of horse urine, but expected when surrounded by farm land. Bus ride only 5 minutes but float time about 1.5-2 hrs., especially if you pull over to the side and hangout in the water a bit.
Clubhouse: The onsite bar is convenient for nighttime entertainment away from your campsite. The food isn't great... frozen packaged items. Slow food/beverage service... order from bar even if sitting on patio. Bar staff not overly friendly. I realize it's annoying to serve rowdy people day in/out... but it's your job. Need better customer service. Dancing on Saturday night.
Overall: You get what you pay for. This is a fun adult camping weekend trip. Once a year is fine for me. I'm not sure I would frequent more than once annually.

This is a great, typical small WIscosin bar and restaurant. Even if you are not a local or regular customer the owners Dee Dee and Bruce will always give you a warm welcome. Very good food, try their Friday night fish-fry or a burger. Just keep in mind that this is not even remotely fancy, but is a perfect example of a neighborhood bar.

I always start in Hortonville and my friend and I take our dogs. It's a well groomed, wide trail with great scenery. I'd like to take my bike on the trail sometime.....if I can just get past those enticing eyes of my dogs who love the outdoors!
