Fremont (formerly Lower Sandusky) is a city in and the county seat of Sandusky County, Ohio, United States, located about 40 miles from Toledo. The population was 16,734 at the 2010 census. It was the home of Rutherford B. Hayes, who served as President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center remains one of the focal points of Fremont, OH. The National Arbor Day Foundation designated Fremont as a Tree City USA.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The site houses their 25-acre wooded estate, known as Spiegel Grove; their 31-room Victorian mansion; the presidential library; a museum that was completely renovated in 2016; the tomb; and a mile of paved walking trails. There are fees to tour the museum and the home. Use of the presidential library, which has a massive genealogy and local history collections, is free. The first floor and and part of the second floor were restored in 2012 to look as it did when Rutherford and Lucy lived there. Nearly all of the furniture, paintings and artifacts in the home belonged to and were used by the couple and their family. The museum was renovated in early 2016 and includes interactive exhibits that tell the story of Rutherford and Lucy, the issues they faced and what they thought about those issues. Sit at a replica of the Resolute Desk - the original was given to President Hayes and still sits in the Oval Office of the White House - try on a Civil War soldier's haversack and more. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America's first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. The facility is celebrating its centennial in 2016. The site is open seven days a week most of the year. From January through March, it is closed on Mondays. It is also closed on Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. Hours on federal holidays are noon to 5 p.m.

This was my first time to visit the Hayes Presidential Library and Museums. I was more than impressed. There are many things to see. The guides through the house are very knowledgeable. The house itself is stunning. The museum has many artifacts about President Hayes and his family. The grounds are beautiful. There is lots of historical facts and piece on the grounds. It is a definite must-do experience.

Highway 53 roughly follows the Sandusky River from Sandusky Bay through Fremont to Upper Sandusky but you really need to get out the car to see and experience the state scenic river. There are a number of county and city parks along its course plus many road bridges. In my opinion, one of the best places is the adjoining Clinton Nature Preserve (Seneca County) and Scheckelhoff Nature Preserve ( Tiffin city park).

We had a guided tour arranged by Brenda Havens, Sandusky County Convention Bureau, of the 1892 jail and also the 1840's dungeon located beneath the Sandusky County Courthouse and heard exciting stories of the history and hauntings behind the unique structure and the inmates who once resided there. So glad they do not use this type of facility to house inmates now. On second thought, they would not be allowed these days. Also, the inmates were fed bread and water maybe three times a day.

I won tickets off of Facebook and we loved this place! The haunted forest was ok but my favorite was the main hydro! They also had food vendors an escape room and you could have your cards read! Awesome place to visit

Located on the Hayes estate, this path has gone from a supply road in 1812 to a jogging path in the summer.

A portion of the Harrison Military Trail from the war of 1812 runs through the grounds of Spiegel Groive, the estate of President Hayes. It is a short paved path for walking or jogging near the Hayes tomb. The trail followed an earlier Indian Trail and connected Franklinton (present Columbus) with the forts along the Sandusky River and was Harrison's supply route for the march on Detroit. Don't miss the Peggy Fleming tree (named for an Indian captive, not the Olympic skater). There is a historic marker on a boulder at Spiegel Grove and about an hour and a half to the south in Waldo in Marion County as well as many other markers ( eight in Fremont alone) along the route.

We live in a campground on this river. It is very scenic. Great blue herons, geese families, cardinals, redwing blackbirds, robins, egrets. My neighbor says she sees eagles flying over the river. There are a few boats and pontoons, some jet skiers once in awhile. A pretty place, a quiet place. Serene would be about it. This is a long river so when we get our boat in we will have lots of places to explore. My husband fishes here and loves it. This year his first fish was about a 30 in catfish. At the moment there is a channel cat in the freezer for next week. We live in Riverbend campground which is small and friendly. It is located off Hwy 163 about half way between Port Clinton and Oak Harbor.
