What to do and see in Fraser Island, Queensland: The Best Things to do

August 5, 2021 Emerita Lamoureux

The turquoise waters surrounding Fraser Island are a frenzy of sea life. The world’s largest sand island is a spectrum of vibrant greens, and the World-Heritage-listed sand bar is simply stunning and the perfect spot for beach fishing. There aren’t paved roads here, just sand tracks, making the entirety of Fraser Island one big 4WD, off-roading adventure.

Such a beautiful fresh water lake, only the depth changes the colour, so turquoise in the shallows. Try cleaning your jewellery in the sand. I have cleaned my watch and watch face many times, that tells you how soft the sand is. So pure.

The bushwalk into the lake was a bit of work but fun for our large group to do together. Beautiful forest to walk through, and by the time you get to the lake -stunning views and a secluded, beautiful spot - you’ve really earned a relaxing swim! The water is much deeper than at McKenzie and Birrabeen, so keep your kids close. The sand is so soft and beautiful here.

No visit to Fraser Island is complete without a visit to Central Station. We drove there and enjoyed a BBQ in the picnic area followed by a short easy walk along a Chrystal clear creek. The lush rainforest completes the experience ... a definite must do.

This place is simply amazing. Pulling up on the edge of the water on our 4wd Vehicle, we were it ready for what greeted us. A true natural playground of beautiful, clean, fresh, drinkable water. We floated, swam and horsed around in the water and it was glorious... highly recommended.

Champagne Pools

Reviewed By DAMIHATHSA - Cairns, Australia

The Champagne Pools are a great, safe spot for some salt water swimming. We timed it well, with the incoming tide bringing waves of fresh water in to the tidal pools. For those with mobility issues, there’s a boardwalk with numerous stairs descending to the beach and ‘pools’. The car parking area is not large, but seemed to be sufficient. There are toilets adjacent the parking area.

This viewpoint is the best place I have ever been to. Crystal clear waters full of marine life either side and the most amazing views over Fraser Island. We saw a pod of dolphins swimming right near the rocks. It also isn’t a hard walk up to the viewpoint.

Maheno Wreck

Reviewed By cnbandy - Brisbane, Australia

The wreck of the Maheno is a sobering insight to Australia's past. The story of the ship is well presented in a viewing area up the beach and after reading how the Maheno met her fate and the history surrounding her leaves you wondering what might have been. A great photo opportunity now before nature devours her completely which will eventually happen in many years to come.
