What to do and see in Figueres, Catalonia: The Best Budget-friendly Things to do

May 7, 2022 Harland Bartelt

Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and home to the Dali Museum, one of the most-visited Spanish museums. Not surprisingly, it is the place for the lovers of fine art. Close to the border with France, this Catalan city offers great food, wine, and beaches. Figueres is just 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by train from the beaches of Costa Brava. Not as touristy as Barcelona, the city offers a relaxing atmosphere, quiet cafes, an historic Old Town and square, and even a castle.

Dali Theatre-Museum

Instituted in 1974, this museum was built on the remains of the former Figueres Theater, and features a broad range of works of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989.)

With on-line bought tickets (strongly recommended) and a speed train the museum gives good overview of Dali's talents - paintings, sculptures, visual effects in a labyrinth of a "building" that, already impressive from outside, contains garden and a "theater". Despite time limited ticket entry, the place (in October!) was still crowded but as one can move freely around it is not a big problem. Just wander around and enjoy! Worthwhile the visit to otherwise uninteresting town.

Walking up from the Hotel Emporda is a treat in itself. There is a 3.5km footpath all around the perimiter of the fort. Well worth the walk with marvellous view. Tak water, the walk lasts around 60 to 90 minutes depending on how often you stop. DIRECTIONS - go to the Hotel Emporda - take the road opposite and follow to the top. At the top there is a T junction - turn left - follow the road then dirt track up the hill. You come out at the car park / main entrance. Lovely healthy walk

It is worth getting to see this museum, despite the large amount of tourists. The "crazy" creativity and variety of materials and subjects Dali chose is wonderful! Also the building in which the museum is located is charming! Don't skip the jewelery section, you haven't seen anything like that .. It's on the exit on the right
