What to do and see in Fargo, North Dakota (ND): The Best Museums

July 26, 2021 Lashaunda Abraham

For a weekend of fun and relaxation, you don't have far to go. North Dakota's largest city gained a certain measure of modern fame with its 1996 movie namesake. But Fargo is more than a city of friendly folks and flat accents. Local museums will please art lovers, children and baseball enthusiasts. After a family visit to the Red River Zoo, parents can unwind at local area lounges, many of which offer casino gaming. In Fargo's sister city of Moorhead, Minnesota, The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center has replicas of a Viking ship and a Norwegian Stave church. Back in Fargo, Bonanzaville USA gives modern visitors a taste of pioneer life.

Fargo Air Museum

Located just off I-29 interstate, The Fargo Air Museum is an easily accessed pet friendly, must-stop location. North Dakota's premiere aviation destination, the Fargo Air Museum's dual hangars are home to aircraft of all eras - from a modern unmanned reconnaissance drone to the "most accurate recreation of a Wright Brothers' flyer the Smithsonian Institute has ever seen." A "flying" museum, many of the airplanes occasionally take to the sky, a unique feature not found in the vast majority of the nation's static-display air museums. More than just a simple place to display its many aircraft, military memorabilia and exhibits, the Fargo Air Museum also houses one of the midwest's largest Aviation libraries. In addition, the museum hosts educational day-camps, speakers and seminars for flight fans of all ages to enjoy. The Fargo Air Museum is a fantastic choice for a unique venue for corporate & private events and has quickly become a local favorite for hosting wedding ceremonies and receptions. Please email for event rental information. Located across the street from the Fargodome, the museum is also surrounded with dining opportunities and is conveniently just moments away from the Fargo's Hector International Airport.

A bit disappointed that the Corsair was not there. A lot of great war birds among other things like a good souvenir shop.

We had so much fun at this zoo. Animals are easy to see, there is a great walkway and easy to follow path through the zoo. It may not have all of the animals other zoos do, but it has some unique ones that I have not seen at other zoos. The zoo grounds are well kept. On this visit we heard the wolves howl. A local family told us they come a few times a week and have never heard that. We were excited to be able to experience that. There is also a petting zoo of farm animals, a playground, and interactive things for children. Don't miss the carousel. This carousel was built by the famous Hershel Carousel Factory in New York and the horses are hand carved. No matter how old or young you are, make this a stop on any visit to Fargo.

A gem in a beautifully recovered space, thought provoking visual art by regional artists. Based in the geography and culture of the region. Was the primary reason for our trip and definitely worth it.
