The Great Theatre of Epidaurus

An ancient Greek theater built in the third century.

Reviewed By Jellybellydancer - Burscough, United Kingdom

The Peloponnese is not short of magnificent ancient sites and the Theatre of Epidavros is up there with the best of them. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the best preserved ancient structures in existence and is a 'must-do' if you are in this part of the world. The scale of the amphitheatre, which seat up to 14,000 people, is awe-inspiring and it's perfectly true that you can hear a coin drop on the stage from the highest seat. We were treated to an impromptu performance by another visitor, obviously keen to test out this claim about the acoustics, and the applause from the back of the theatre resonated as clearly as that from the front. It is definitely worth climbing up to the top if you can, the steps are a little uneven in places but perfectly manageable. The views from the top are amazing.

Sanctuary of Asklepios

Reviewed By L7768EQdavidd - Devon, United Kingdom

Thursday 8th October and we visited this ancient site which was the sanctuary of Asclepius the god of medicine. It was also here where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, practiced and taught. Rediscovered in in 1902 by the German archeologist Herzog. Despite the ravages of time, natural disasters and removal of artefacts, this remains something special. The entry fee was €8 and not €3 as listed on the website. It was possible to purchase a  ticket for entry to here, the museum and Casa Romana, valid for 3 days for €15. On entering the site we were totally amazed as to the size of the place, it was vast. We decided that the best way to see the place was to start at the top and work our way back down again. As the site is laid out over 3 levels, we climbed the two massive flights of steps up to the top level, once we caught our breaths, we started our exploration. There is so much to see and many eye catching features which included the vast arched retaining wall, the upright pillars of the Stoa and the various altars.

Epidaurus Archaeological Museum

The museum was built in the early 1900s by the same man who excavated Epidauros and all the exhibits in the museum are from the site.

Located at the site that houses the Great Theatre of Epidaurus, this museum houses the key Archeological finds of the site and is presented to create the experience of being inside an ancient Greek temple. The ticket to the site includes access to this small but very beautiful museum.
