Eltham north reserve

This Reserve is stunning! There is a wonderful children’s playground... gorgeous wide paths for walkers and bike riders... it runs along the edge of a creek. But what makes it special for me is the memories- as a child I remember my Grandmother’s house being in the Reserve. I remember laughter , the friendly locals, the smell of the bush - this place will always be special for me. AND today was no different- we met an older couple in the Reserve and reminisced about the community so many years ago. It’s a wonderful green space.

Sugarloaf Reservoir Park

Sugarloaf Reservoir Park - located in the Christmas Hills north-east of Melbourne – is a tranquil setting for a picnic or a stroll near the reservoir shores, offering wonderful views across the water. There are opportunities for bush walking, bird watching, sightseeing, sailing and shoreline fishing. For the energetic, there is a 15km walk that circumnavigates the reservoir. Why not have a picnic at Ridge or Saddle Dam picnic area overlooking the reservoir? The park has toilet facilities accessible for those with limited mobility at both picnic areas. Visit one of the many lookouts or try the walking trails. Wildlife on the walking tracks is abundant and diverse; you may see Wedge-tailed Eagles, Black-tailed Wallabies, Echidnas, Kangaroos and more. Shoreline fishing is allowed in specifically designated areas during park hours. Sugarloaf Reservoir is located on Simpson Road (via Eltham – Yarra Glen Road) in Christmas Hills. Gates open at 8.30am and close at 7.00pm during daylight saving. Outside of daylight savings, the park closes at 5.00pm.

I have walked in this reserve for a few years. We sometimes walk from the Ridge car park and sometimes from the Saddleback car park. We walk around the who,e of Sugarloaf Reservoir once a year. The wild life is always special although we would like to see the feral deer removed. There are toilets provided about 1/3 of the way whichever route taken. There are shelters with tables at each of the car parks with large lawn area for children to run around on.

Edendale Community Environment Farm

Edendale Community and Environment Farm is a key destination for Nillumbik residents and visitors. The site provides a range of important social and environmental benefits through environmental education, raising awareness about sustainable lifestyles, growing and selling indigenous plants and as a place to meet, learn skills and participate through volunteering. Originally part of a 51 acre site first purchased from The Crown in 1852 by pioneer Henry Stooke, the site has now been transformed into a vibrant community environment centre which delivers a wide range of environmental and sustainability based programs. There are so many fun and informative activities all year round at Edendale including meeting our animals, visiting the Indigenous plant nursery, exploring the gardens and artwork, or enjoying a coffee at Café Eden.

Community farm- enter for a gold coin donation (though no-one enforces it). take a wander through the farm- there weren't many animals today- ducks, alpacas, goats, guinea pigs, sheep, chooks. There is a lot of recycled artwork scattered around which is really nice. Small cafe and a large area where you can sit and eat. The farm is popular with local aspiring artists and others volunteering their time. There's an indigenous plant nursery where you can buy some local plants. Park at the Eltham North Adventure Playground and walk across the bridge for a nicer entry experience. There is ample parking either at fram entrance or the adventure park.
