We want to thank you and Adventure & Fun Albania for the wonderful opportunity we had to travel with Ben on our Hiking and sightseeing tour in Northern Albania. The trip was really amazing and we felt so relaxed and well looked after. It was such a surprise that the tour went with only the two of us, so we felt quite special. Ben was a fabulous guide! He has a huge passion for his country, the outdoors and his job as a guide! His knowledge of the history and regions we were in is incredible. We were delighted with each accommodation and the meals were delicious. Thank you for your assistance with all of our needs and the excellent communication with the company. All the best to you and best regards to Ben.

I can't thank our tour guide Adam enough for giving us a fun filled day from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to get him as your tour guide you will agree with me that he is one interesting man on this planet! He went above and beyond, even making additional pit stops. He showed us so much in one day that would of easily taken us two to three days to do. The tour exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to do future day trips in other countries/cities with Albanian Express Travel and Adam!

This tour provides the opportunity to discover Albania and get a taste of the incredible beauty of Montenegro. Beginning in Albania, our visits include a number of the highlights of this country and its fascinating history, ancient and the more recent years of communist struggle, with four UNESCO sites visited as well as the beautifully scenic Albanian Riviera. In Montenegro we enjoy the stunning scenery of Kotor Bay visiting the old town, a wonderful ‘living museum’ of historic and picturesque streets. We also visit Budva, rich in historical monuments and home to yet another wonderful old town, which offers a treasure chest of cultural heritage. Other visits here include eye-catching Perast and historically glorious Cetinje, Montenegro’s ‘honorary’ capital.

Booked the tour last minute with Aria Travel and it was a great experience. My guide Gavi is very knowledgeable about the history and communicated it well. We started out early and had a little break at Belsh. I got to try the mountain tea. After the short break, we continued to Berat. It was lovely to see the Castle, the modern town, the Gori bridge and go up to houses to see how they were built in stacks. He recommended having lunch in Hotel Mangalemi. Good recommendation. The food was good and ok for the price. We left Berat and got to Apollonia before Sunset. He also presented the history of the Apollonia ruins and the church located inside. We left just at sunset. I definitely enjoyed the experience and went further to book more tours with Aria Travels.

6. PEARLS OF SOUTHERN ALBANIA (6 nights) by ADRIATIK TOURS LLC

Luxury Adriatik Hotel & SPA, Plazh, Rruga Pavaresia, Durrës 2000, Albania Adriatik Tours

Closed to outsiders for much of the 20th century, Albania has long been Mediterranean Europe's enigma. Until fairly recently its rumpled mountains, fortress towns and sparkling beaches were merely a rumour on most travel maps. But, with the end of a particularly brutal strain of communism in 1991, Albania tentatively swung open its gates. The first curious tourists to arrive discovered a land where ancient codes of conduct still held sway and where the wind whistled through the shattered remnants of half-forgotten Ancient Greek and Roman sites. Quarter of a century after throwing off the shackles of communism, Albania's stunning mountain scenery, crumbling castles, boisterous capital and dreamy beaches rivalling any in the Mediterranean continue to enchant, but hurry here because as word gets out to what Albania is hiding, the still tiny trickle of tourists threatens to become a flood.

We did not pick Dorien Malaj as our guide in Albania; we were matched up by one of the travel industry’s many anonymous middle men—but the moment we actually met Dorien, we knew we had gotten lucky. He was quick to identify our particular interests and to adjust accordingly. Our focus in Albania was their “accursed mountains” in the north east. We expected that in getting from Dubrovnik to Albania, Montenegro would be little more than a “drive through”. However, Dorien took us on a stunning mountain route that included the two beautiful but very different towns of Kotor and Cetinje, which really put Montenegro on the map for us, an added bonus. Dorien was so well-informed and happy to share both the hard facts and the subtle cultural nuances we were observing. His interactions with local people were very interesting to observe, and his background in Psychology gave him an interesting perspective, greatly enhancing our experience. His personal interests were so varied and wide, and that made looking through his eyes very stimulating for us and made conversation very productive. There was no subject off limits—about either Albania or the US. Dorien has a nice sense of humor that seemed to match ours…so that we had lots of fun together, too. It was a very easy and open relationship.

8. Visit Albania and North of Greece

Albania Express Travel

Through our Crossroads of Cultures program, travelers learn from expert lecturers while journeying through Albania’s most notable sites and towns along with Epirus, Greece’s northwest region. Even though Albania, which borders northwest Greece, has been inhabited for at least ten millennia, today it’s one of Europe’s last “undiscovered’ countries but Albania’s strategic position, only a short distance from Italy across the Adriatic Sea, and commanding the route from west to east, made it an important and flourishing possession of empires and other powers since antiquity. Greeks founded cities on its shore, beginning in the 7th century BC; the Romans made it a province, later becoming a Byzantine and Ottoman territory; and in the early 20th century, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and under the domination of Italy and Germany.

9. Visit Albania and Kosovo

Albania Express Travel

It’s hard to find a patch of Europe that hasn’t been overrun by travel. Hard, but not impossible. Among the rocky mountains and green fields of Albania and Kosovo there are plenty of shepherds, monasteries, lakes, valleys and Byzantine churches – what’s lacking is crowds. It’s taken decades for the Balkans to wipe away memories of conflict and communism, but (amazingly) they’ve emerged strong and smiling.

Upon arriving to Saranda I knew I wanted to see more of the other locations outside of the general area. So, in loving the fine folks at Tea Tours, I opted to take a tour to Qeparo and Himara. I mean, you can't go wrong. An ancient village, reminiscent of what some movies are made of and the beautiful beach in Himara to enjoy after perusing Qeparo. And, Qeparo itself, set upon the top of a mountain, truly has some incredible photo opportunities to discover and capture. And the village, while barely inhabited by the locals, also has many opportunities to snap a great architectural photo. I do hope to tour a little more with Tea Tours, as everyone there is truly helpful, and kind. And, the guide, fantastic!
