Cantigny Visitor Center

Reviewed By 866TaylorB - Chicago, United States

There is more to Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, that you might suspect. So the place to start your visit is the Visitor Center. Built as one of Colonel Robert McCormick's horse stables, it also served as the First Division Museum from the early 1960s until the new museum was opened in 1993. Upon entering the venue, your attention is immediately drawn to the giant floor map. Built at 1/25 scale to accurately reflect the size of the McCormick estate, it gives visitors a birds-eye view of Cantigny. In the adjoining theater, see a 12-minute orientation film that highlights all of Cantigny's attractions, including the McCormick house museum, First Division Museum, Tank Park, gardens and 27-hole public golf course. Across the main gallery, is the Joseph Medill Room. Medill, Colonel McCormick's grandfather, was the original owner of the estate. Both were publishers of the Chicago Tribune. Outside, admire the large, painted collage that chronicles the life of Colonel McCormick. Also housed in the Visitor Center is the Cantigny gift shop, a coffee shop known as Bertie's Bistro and Le Jardin, a full-service restaurant.

We had an hour to kill in Elmhurst and walked through their public library. This is a glimpse of what libraries should be. We are blessed with an excellent library in Fort Wayne but with a couple of exceptions Elmhurst has us beat.
