Claytor Lake State Park

Reviewed By Sandra E - Beckley, West Virginia, United States

Claytor Lake State Park is unbeatable for camping, picnics, boating, parties, fishing, weddings, photographics, wildlife, & great birding. The park staff is great & will help you with anything. Camping is hindered only by a lack of a good reservation system. I once had to sit in my camper 6 hours to get into a site that would fit my 5th. Wheel. You can't just reserve your site. I have not been able to camp there once this season even though my camper is boarded at Hales boateL, JUST 100 yards from the park entrance.
The marina is small & the slips are difficult to maneuver in & out of. It's an old marina that needs upgraded. There is room to add slips for larger boats but like many of the state parks, money is a problem.
Picnic sites are great & restrooms are clean & handicapped accessible- except for the one beside the marina. Again, lack of funding is the problem.
Birding is excellent and Osprey nests are viewable. Big blue herons & piliated woodpeckers are numerous.
Park fees are reasonable & fishing, parking handicapped areas are throughout the park.

Nice and varied lunch menu in a very relaxing setting. Presentation of plate is very appetizing and food is delicious. Homemade potato chips make a great appetizer and the house salad is very fresh. Sandwiches are very tasty and filling. The desserts are outstanding. After your meal you can browse thru the market and adjoining buildings which have a variety of goods.

This is a great ballpark for watching the Pulaski Yankees play. There is not a bad seat in the park. Very clean and roomy seats. Ticket prices are very reasonable- $5/$8/$11. The food is good - especially the soft serve ice cream. Fun night for all of us.

Glencoe Museum

Reviewed By galndixie - Christiansburg, Virginia

We went to the museum for the Mary Draper Ingles weekend, saw all the venues, it was very informative and interesting. Our tour guide in the home was dressed in a beautiful period costume, and truly looked and acted the part of a Civil War Belle. She was very knowledgeable about the house, the Wharton and Radford families, the area history, and the times. The history displays were very well put together, the whole house and the grounds were immaculate, and the visit was a relaxing and educational experience. Entry is free, they do have a donation box, which helps to support the museum, but it is not required to donate. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. If you're driving down I-81 and need a break, stop off exit 105, drive on into town, it's on your left, and there are places to eat nearby. It's an easy re-entry back onto I-81. It's a stop worth making!

Just two little pull offs on each side of the road but well worth a few minutes of your time to catch the views of the area. Great spot to watch the sunset. There's also an old chimney left standing from some sort of structure there. Didn't take time to read the signage. I'll get that on the next visit.

We took the Casino tour to Bethlehem, Pa with this company. we were picked up at a designated area in Richmond. It was a two night stay tour. It was wonderful. The driver Paul and the hostess Linda were great . Paul was a confident driver and Linda was personable and funny. She told lots of cute little jokes , strolled the aisle visiting with everyone on the bus and knew all of our names without having to ask. Played quite a few games of bingo. That helped pass the time. . We had a great time at the Sands Casino and hotel and it was so stress free knowing that Paul would be driving us home. We have been on other trips with this company and they are always enjoyable and fun. If you . want to leave the driving to someone else, try this company. they offer lots of wonderful trips to many different places and they have different pick up points along the way.
