Faaker See Lake

Reviewed By marcopolo111 - Cleveland, Oh

This is a small lake south of Villach in a relatively flat area, not as scenic as other nearby. The water is blue and crystal clear. The major problem is that the entire lake had been cordoned out by commercial activities, hotel and camping and it is not accessible without a fee and there is no way to walk along the shores.

Gerlitzen-Kanzelbahn

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

This interesting journey starts at the base station at Annenheim (part of Sattendorf), on the shore of Lake Ossiach. Ample parking is provided for; an open parking lot and a multi level car park. Access to the "Gerlitzen Kanzelbahn" is free with the "Kaernten Card", otherwise prepare for approximately € 20.00 a head. The first ride to the middle station is in a closed gondola with perspex windows, which are made rather opaque by sticking advertisements on the outside of the gondola; furthermore, the perspex is rather heavily scratched. Picture taking is only rewarding by leaning out of the window. From the middle station the second ride is spectacular, being in open conveyances, hung from the cable. Don't forget to bring a coat. Arriving at the upper station, the views are stunning. Walking and hiking is rewarding; it is also a choice spot for paragliding. Going down is as spectacular as going up, with the additional prize that we got fortunately into a gondola with comparatively clean windows; so some spectacular pictures of Lake Ossiach could be taken. For catering I advise to bring your own. The cafés and restaurants on the middle station and the upper station are closed or offer unimaginative and relatively expensive "self service" buffet. But, generally speaking, the visit to the "Gerlitzen Kanzelbahn" was a day well spent with lots of unforgettable impressions. See the pictures I attached. To be recommended.

Burgruine Finkenstein

Reviewed By DanandKay - Melrose, WI, USA

After taking a short walk up the hill to the ancient castle, you will be treated to one of the most panoramic views in all of Austria! There is a small bar / restaurant at the top as well. The biggest surprise of all is the open air Amphitheater made inside the walls of the castle. It's quite stunning and we wish we can come back for a concert here someday! This is a fabulous attraction in the Finkenstein Region.

Kloster Wernberg

Reviewed By Violette54 - Phoenix, Arizona

Just west of Villach, in the rural countryside, is the Castle Wernberg Kloster, overlooking the Drau River. The ancient Castle dates back to 1575, when it began as a Benedictine monastery. It fell into disrepair and the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood discovered it, renovated it, and it is now their working home and farm.
Our tour and dinner were hosted by Sister Monika, the Singing Nun. She did indeed play and sing for us and gave a very informative tour, telling us about the monastery and the Sister's work there.
Dinner was supplied from the monastery Gardens and farm. It was fresh simple fare; home farm-raised chicken, and salads from their Gardens, fresh bread from their ovens, and fresh fruit from their trees. It was quite good.
The lifestyle for these 62 sisters [who, at the time of our visit, ranged in age from 45-97] is wholesome, simple, and filled with fresh air, joy, work, and prayer.
There are guest quarters for those who wish to stay and join the sisters for a few days.
There are single stall restrooms, which are very clean, and simple.
Free Parking is available for autos only in a gravel lot. By the front gate.
Make an appointment to tour this peaceful place.

You can here again and again and experience the peace and quiet of this little gem. And DON'T forget to go into the church, it is amazingly beautiful. If you have the chance, take in a concert featured during the summer month. It's MAGIC!

Landskron Castle

Reviewed By pd1357 - Braunschweig, Germany

The show with the birds of prey is absolutely recommendable.
It is every time a bit different but always amazing, interesting and entertaining.
I have seen already several shows like this but this is the best.
With the Kärnten Card the entrance is included once per day! We have seen the show twice and both times were excellent.
Attention: you have to plan enough time to get up to the castle even if you want to go there by car. 30min before the show starts there is a traffic jam to get up to the castle.
From the parking to the castle you should plan at least 20min. There is only a limited number of parking places close to the castle. The other parking places are about 10-15 min. by foot with a steep ascent.
But it is absolute worth starting 20 Min. earlier!
We will visit this show again!
