The visit of the belfry (14-15th) will allow you to discover its rooms and espacially the 62th bells of its carillon which is a real musical instrument. Enjoy a panoramic, unforgettable view of the old Douai from the platform.
We knew nothing of Douai, and it was our hosts who recommended the tour of the Beffroi. We assembled (no booking needed) on the ground floor of the building, where there is a small shop and a couple of introductory exhibits. The Beffroi dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, and although the presentation was in French, we found we could understand parts of it - also many of the exhibits have English translations alongside. There doesn't seem to be a lift, and there is one fairly long flight of steps, though the rest of the ascent is well paced. We particularly enjoyed seeing - and hearing - the carillon, which was demonstrated by a performance of two pieces. You also get to see the halls of the hotel de ville. The visit was unhurried, with plenty of time to take photos, and for anyone who wished to ask questions. There are guided visits most days at 10.30, 3.00 and 4.30, and the tour takes just about one hour.

Small gem with several outstanding paintings and fabulous sculptures. Easy to park just down the block in public parking area. Just drive past the museum entrance and at the end of the street, past the traffic light , is a public parking area. We drove 45 minues to get there, and did not regret the trip. Save 1-2 hours for the visit.

Though not easy to find on our GPS since it just opened last year,, we had to use the street address to locate it. Most of the displayed objects are local, and the text is in French and Englidh, which we really appreciated. Displayed objects were in amazingly good condition, with varied subjects, from early paleolithic subjects, to later food gathering, life styles and jewelry. The staff was very welcoming, and parking plentiful. Good bathroom facilities. Small room with eating tables, with snacks and hot/cold drinks in machines.

Length of 112 m and a width of 42 m with a vaulted ceiling at 25 meters. Huge dimensions for a town of 40,000 inhabitants. Scaffolding on the outside. The inside shows decay, probably from leakages in the roof. All in all impressive and completely deserted, except for one guard.

Porte de Valenciennes shows the importance of the Flanders region in the 15-19 century. It is an impressive buiding, maybe not a beauty but rather grotesque.
