What to do and see in Doolin, Province of Munster: The Best Things to do Good for Kids

July 30, 2021 Weston Hennigan

Doolin (Irish: Dúlainn) is a coastal village in County Clare, Ireland, on the Atlantic coast. It borders the spa town of Lisdoonvarna. It is a noted centre of traditional Irish music, which is played nightly in its pubs, making it a popular tourist destination. There are numerous nearby archaeological sites, many dating to the Iron Age and earlier. Doonagore Castle and Ballinalacken Castle are also in the area. The area was officially classified as part of the West Clare Gaeltacht (an Irish-speaking community) until 1956, and, due to trade with the Aran Islands, maintained a strong connection to it until the 1990s.

Doolin Cave

Discover Doolin Cave, an extraordinary underground caving experience in the Burren, County Clare. Take a fully guided tour of one of Europe’s most compelling cave attractions, and go over 200 feet under the limestone of the Burren landscape. Travel back in time over 350 million years and see how the Burren was formed. You’ll journey through a system of passages before emerging in a large chamber which is home to one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, the Great Stalactite - which was once beautifully described as “the palest gleam in the darkest deep”. It is the longest free-hanging stalactite in the northern hemisphere! At 7.3 metres long and weighing an estimated 10 tonnes, it naturally suspends from the cave ceiling like a chandelier. It is hard to believe that this enormous calcite formation was formed from a single drop of water over hundreds of thousands of years. Take the opportunity to experience the third-largest stalactite in the world, on a Doolin Cave Tour!

Doolin caves are a real treat. Perfect for a rainy day. The guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the caves, it made the experience really interesting and fun. The stalactite is a must see. Unbelievable to see it up close. The history of it is extraordinary and to be able to travel safely into caves that are over 250,000 years old is amazing. Well done doolin caves for bringing this to the public.

Doolin Pier

The new Doolin pier provides safe travel options for ferry trips to the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher. The old pier is now available for leisure activities.

Reviewed By KalamataOliver - Northumberland, United Kingdom

The Doolin Pier is just a short walk, maybe 20 minutes, from the village of Doolin, where a visit to the Chocolate Shop is a must do. On the day we visited last February, there were no ferries going to the Arran Islands, however the elemental forces of nature there are exhilarating. We were given a tip to drive about a km out of Doolin to get a fantastic vantage point for the mythical Cliffs of Moher. We were able to find the turn off and our expectations were exceeded, breathtaking vistas towards the cliffs. To get the most out of the experience it is best to go off-season with fewer tour buses clogging up the roads. Recommended.
