The Dobrovo Castle

Reviewed By Miha P - Maribor, Slovenia

Renaissance villa Dobrovo is one of the best architectures of Brda. It has average vine cellar and average restaurant in the ground floor. You need to walk up through small doors right of the main entrance and walk up to the second floor. There is fine collection of graphics, all works of Zoran Music (1909 -2005). Painter was from Brda but he lived in Venice and Paris. You need to be persistent. Local personnel are sometimes lazy and they don’t know how to explain the collections (they don’t have enough knowledge) in the building. During the summer season you can visit a concert or two. We hope that local commune will educate some better guides for this museum and Vipolže.

The castle is breath taking beautiful sorounded with wineyards and beautiful views to Goriška Brda. I think one of the best locations in Slovenia for weddings, so our friends decided to say i do there. Everything was perfect but they need to improve the kindness of the staff (especcialy a lady receptionist) and please buy some good sheets for the bedrooms and towels - there were none in our room when sleeping there!!

We visited as part of a tour, so two coach loads turned up at once. But they were ready for us, one group went one way and the other group to a different part of the cellar complex.
The guide was excellent and spoke very good English and explained everything well.
The cellars are massive and to see the amount of wine stored maturing including the sparking wine in their inverted bottles was eye opening.
Of course the main part was the tastings which took place in pleasant room where servers poured your wine and then the guide gave a light hearted talk with each one.
The wines were very good, and of course there is opportunity to buy them in the shop afterwards, which we did. The same wine we bought was on sale at Ljubljiana airport for 5 euros more, so its well worth buying at the cellars.

Scurek

Reviewed By Dan K - Braselton, Georgia

The Goriska/Brda, a secluded region of Slovenia, reminds you of Tuscany. In fact many times while driving through the region we passed into and out of Italy. It is a region hidden behind mountain ranges on the east and north and is full of hillside villages, cypress trees, and rolling hillsides covered with vines. They take their wines seriously here and there are several large wineries but one of the best though small vineyards is Scurek located near Dobrovo. It is run by a father and five sons and they give you first class treatment during your visit. Here from about 20 hectares they release yearly up to 80,000 bottles of full bodied wines. Their best are the white and red Stara Brajda blends. In addition to the cellars they will soon have a small restaurant on site. The hillside village of Dobovo with its' castle or smaller Medena are good towns to use as a base.
