Diriyah

These ruins of the first capital of Saudi Arabia consist of walls, houses and palaces, some of which have been restored

This is another worth seeing site of Riyadh with traditional mud-brick architecture, colourful Saudi doors, Al Bujairi park, and maze of small alleyways with cafes and craft shops. This is the place of Diriyah Museum, a former palace with exhibits on Saudi history as well as the Al-Zawihra Mosque. Wadi Hanifah valley is lined with date palms and it is a popular spot for picnics, walking, and cycling. I recommend to visit the place in mid afternoon and stay till after the sunset. When it gets dark, the whole area lights up setting an amazing stage for picture taking. If you are lucky, you can see a light show depicting the history of Saudi Arabia.

At-Turaif District in Diriyah

Oh my goodness, how can I write a review worthy enough to explain the amazing experience at the site?! We went today and were given a personal tour, even before the site reopens to the public after what can only be described as a total transformation. By that I don't mean its been overly modernised or ruined. It had Been sympatheticly restored in appropriate areas to show the history, whilst still showing enough of the old to be authentic. I've been fortunate enough to visit many places in the world and actually as we pulled up likened it to Pompeii in Naples Italy. I loved it when we went there, but I have to say that this place absolutely smashes Pompeii out of the water and without a doubt the quality of the place, service and education/history should not be missed if visiting Riyadh. Dare I say, it might even be a reason to visit altogether and for me to return with family and colleagues. Loved it from start to finish. Its a triumph!
