Independence Monument

Reviewed By One_Bangali - Dhaka City, Bangladesh

The Independence Monument, or 'Shadhinota Stambha' as it is called in Bengali, has been erected at the spot where independence leader and Father of the Nation - Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - made his historic declaration of independence before the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The monument is placed on the exact spot where the podium was and from which Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historic speech. Ironically this is also where the Pakistani army generals surrendered a few months later! The Independence Monument looks very high and has beautiful calligraphic inscriptions on the glass exterior. At night the large tower and the light emitted from it makes it visible from nearly the furthest corners of the city. There is an eternal flame commemorating the brave Bangladeshi men and women who gave their lives to gain independence in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
