Historic Railroad Depot

This 1905 railroad depot has undergone a $2.5M restoration. Today one-half of the depot is a police station and the other half is a train museum containing original railroad materials as well as model electric trains(HO, O, and G Scale). An HO model train layout contains scale replicas of many Decatur facilities. A true gem.

Reviewed By F4738QCmiker - Madison, United States

The model railroads at the Decatur Union Depot have all been upgraded. New scale models of Decatur buildings/homes have been installed on the digital HO layout located in the old ticket office. A new outdoor G-Scale loop has been installed on the former passenger loading platform and a the Children's Christmas Layout now has two levels running O-Scale, G-Scale, and S-Scale trains that visiting children can run. I went to the original Cooks museum in the 80s. This multi-million dollar museum is a hidden gem in North Alabama! It’s fun for groups, children of all ages, and solo adults or couples. This is the ONLY museum I’ve been to that has a cave. The cave is the most realistic of any actual cave I’ve ever been too. The taxidermy is beautiful. I know, I’m not really into dead animals, but when they represent a biome of species it’s a different thing. The sand table showing biomes is wonderful. I’ve been here about a dozen times and I still see new things each time. Well worth the visit.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge

This is a wonderful place to visit. Unfortunately the observation tower is closed due to COVID-19. You can still walk the nature trail and trail to observation tower. The best thing is standing still and watching thousands of Sandhill Cranes act in their natural setting. The sound of the. Is amazing. Binoculars make it even better! Walk the boardwalk also across the road. If you’re lucky you’ll also see hundreds of white Pelicans and snowy egrets.
