Beautiful wide open sandy beach with private peaceful areas amongst the dunes also, commercial zones with plentiful beach restaurants and bars. The coastal tram service runs parallel with the beach. If you enjoy walking you can walk as far as you like then take a ride back to your starting point.

It's an old fishermen's cottage from 250 years old.. Probably the oldest cottage of the Belgian coast. The museum is free, provided that you consume. The livingroom is 12p, gardin, 18p and you'll find the most cozy attic. There is a presentation on power point that shows the history of the cottage. Pieter Aspe, a crime writer, used the location for his book : "Ontmaskerd " The owners are real descendants of the original inhabitants. it is just around the corner of the Jose Hotel. It will bring you back in time. Enjoy

The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

This is my fourth visit and I'm still utmost happy this place exists in De Haan. Probably thanks to the idealism of the owner. I believe strongly that he would have more customers if he could quit all the local publicity , which takes too long before the movie starts.

Plage d'Ostende

Reviewed By Robby G C - Toronto, Canada

This beach is quite popular. During the summer, the beach is filled with people. Some who wants a tan, others who walk or play and some who swim in the North Sea. Little kids look for shells, with which they can buy paper flowers.
The Lido is quite close. It's a place for kids to spend a whole day with lots of activities and making friends.
As for me, I preferred to come after 6 P.M. The beach is almost completely empty and I can enjoy the nature to the fullest. On this beach, we can always see the Kursaal. We cannot be lost, as long as we look at the Kursaal.
Anyone who needs a drink or food, they only have to go on the dike and they will find that without a problem. On the beach there is also a place where people can buy drinks.
My favorite time on this beach, is when the sun sets. It's amazing!
I love this beach and every time I come to Ostend, I go to the beach, even in the winter. It's a must to see how beautiful this beach is, especially with its sunsets!

The Dunes of Bredene

Reviewed By Robby G C - Toronto, Canada

Although the sky was getting dark, I wanted to stop at the dunes of Bredene.
I had lots of special moments there when I was young with my parents. I remember looking for bunkers and explore them, as well as trekking through the dunes, as we did that day, in the dark. We had a picnic and we enjoyed the dunes and the North Sea. Those were good memories!
However back to now, it wasn't completely dark. The lights from the highway were quite bright. Still, the more we went closer to the North Sea, the darker it became.
I knew something splendid would happen, besides having a nice leisurely walk.
The sun was setting and it was truly beautiful. The seagulls nearby us were enjoying this view as well. We stayed there for twenty minutes, admiring what whas happening around us.
Then we turned back and we found our car without any problems. Even in the dark, these dunes are attractive! We had a great time, in wonder with the sunset! Worthily to see!

De Concessie

Reviewed By Trainbleu - Brussels

For lovers of all things beautiful and architecture buffs in particular, taking a stroll through De Haan is an enchanting experience, especially considering the shocking ugliness of most of the Belgian coastal architecture. The arrival of the costal steam tram (1886) was critical to the planned transformation of the seaside hamlet of De Haan (‘the rooster’ in Dutch) into a fancy resort. Soon the Belgian State leased some 123 acres of dunes - the so-called “concessie” - to property developers for building a seaside town according to the stringent rules conceived by King Leopold II’s personal advisor, German town planner Joseph Stübben. Over the following years, luxury hotels and villas set in luscious Gardens sprang up along winding alleys following the gentle slopes of the dunes. Today they make for an amazing open air museum of architecture in Anglo-Normand, Flemish, art deco, Bauhaus-Belle Époque and modernist style, but with real people going about their daily business. And also for a walk through history: here the Grand Hotel Bellevue, where Austrian author Stefan Zweig stayed in 1914 and Alfred Einstein had coffee in 1933, there the former Grand Hôtel du Coq-sur-Mer (now town hall) where Nobel Prize- winning Belgian author Maurice Maeterlinck stayed in 1889, the Villa Savoyarde, where Einstein lived from April to September 1933 before leaving for England from where he emigrated to the States …
At the Tourist Office, which is housed in the historic tram station (1902) next to the present-day station, we picked up a map of a heritage walk of about 2 miles around the area (2 euro). It was easy to follow because there are lovely street signs at each crossing. Unfortunately the text is only available in Dutch. On our tour we especially loved the art deco Hotel Astoria, the gorgeous Bauhaus - belle époque villa Les Pierres Claires ( Gracialaan 26) and the modernist Villa Goëlands (1933), adorned with a statue of a nymph (“Nixe”) by Jan Anteunis on the seafront side.
De Concessie seems to have caused a major confusion in Tripadvisor. It is the name of the historic part of De Haan (listed #1 of things to do), but it is also the name of a restaurant at Leopoldlaan 24. Many reviews have been posted under the wrong heading, boosting the rating of the restaurant, so it seems.
