What to do and see in Dangriga, Belize: The Best Places and Tips

July 31, 2017 Flossie Demartino

Love culture, not crowds? Leave the bustle of Belize City for quieter Dangriga, at the end of the Hummingbird Highway. The town is a suitable base for exploring the Stann Creek district: visit the Maya Center and the world's first jaguar preserve, explore the beach and try snorkeling at the reef a few miles out.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve

This reserve was established to help protect the endangered jaguar and other species native to Belize.

Reviewed By Hinoe66 - Richmond, Canada

We decided to head into Cockscomb basin with the hopes of seeing more wildlife, Jaguars in particular. We knew our timing was a little off, being rainy season and all, but we looked forward to some hiking nonetheless. We didn’t see any wildlife except for all the iguanas everywhere. The park itself is gorgeous and had it been a warmer day we wou,d have taken advantage of the beautiful pool under a small waterfall. The flora of the park in itself is worthy of a visit.
My only concern with getting to the nature preserve was the horrible road. Despite having 4-wheel drive the road up was nothing short of a mud wrestling pit. At times I didn’t think we were going to make it, but with some knuckle whitening pit slogging we made it there and back.
As others have stated, lots of bug screen as those nasty little sold flies are everywhere. Good shoes are necessary, but various routes are available to various levels of difficulty. If you go in the off season though, expect to be coming back out with a decent amount of mud on you.

Maya Center Mayan Museum

The Maya Center Mayan Museum is a culturally interactive museum, that entertains and teach real Mayan culture. We do hands on demonstration, such as tortilla making, Cultural Dance training, Coffee making and now Chocolate making. Chocolate making is more fun as you get to do it, you will discover how much it is.

I love visiting the Maya Center Maya Museum and Che'il Chocolate Factory owned and operated by Julio and Heliodora Saqui. They and their staff produce some of the best organic chocolate on the planet. You must try the different flavored chocolate such as orange, mint, the 80% dark and milk chocolate. Yummy! If you're up for it they will let you make your own chocolate as well. They also offer a wide variety of tours available to nearby attractions such as the Cockscomb Jaquar Preserve. Their museum shop also features art work created by local Mayan artists and they offer items such as slate carvings, hand woven baskets, wood carvings and embroidered items. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

This was a very educational stop on our visit to Dangriga. We had, not surprisingly, never heard of the Garifuna culture before and found the museum to be very interesting. It's on the Hummingbird Hwy just before you reach the main village and worth the stop and the small entry fee of $5USD.
