Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

Reviewed By derekfr - Paris, France

The Lavaux tearraces are the south-facing vineyards along the North shore of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva). The whole area from Lutry, just east of Lausanne, to Vevey/Montreux is cross-crossed by a network of wide paths allowing walks of various lengths, both from point A to B, or circular ones.
Access can be by car or public transport as 2 railway lines serve the area - the lakeshore route from Lausanne to Montreux, where an hourly stopping train serves all the lakeside villages, and a higher level line from Lausanne to Chexbres.
I wallked from Cully to St. Saphorin. The only "difficult" part was the climb up the steps (lots!) from the lake shore to the Terrace at Eppesses and the steep descent back down into St. Saphorin, about 8 km further on. The views are spectacular the whole way. The weather was not great the day I went, but in some ways the constantly changing cloud formations over the high Alps were more interesting than a perfectly blue sky - honestly! This was my first visit to the Lavaux terraces but it certainly won't be my last as there are still many areas left to explore and I would happily do the same route all over again.

Les Freres Dubois

The "Cully Jazz" is a yearly festival, now in its 30th year, which takes place in the village close to the banks of the lake. They have great acts (we heard Monty Alexander for example) and the ambiance is festive and down to earth. Various bistros and restaurants participate with small stages for a more intimate experience with lesser know artists. It still can be quite frosty in April especially if it's windy. Here their site:

The two ladies working here were rather indifferent and cold. We had to call them multiple times for their attention even when the store was almost empty. If you are looking for a friendly and well guided wine tasting experience, this is not the place for you. This shop basically is a reseller of the wines from the area and the ladies working there did not come across as knowledgeable people. It's kinda like a wine supermarket that has a tasting menu.
The good thing about this shop though is that they are open throughout the week and weekends and you just need to drop in without an appointment so that's convenient. But for a pleasant and friendly experience, visiting an actual wine producer in the area and tasting their wines will be a much more interesting and memorable experience.

Collection de l'Art Brut

Reviewed By Elana G - Far Rockaway, New York

I came on Rick Steves recommendation and was glad I did, its worth the visit, as you do see art in a different form. The artists are from societies fringe with unfortunate childhood stories, criminal backgrounds, mental health challenges. Their artwork benefited both them and society , I am glad the curator had the foresight to collect their works and the presentation was well done and added to our appreciation of their works. I especially enjoyed the works of nature on the upperfloors. I understand the works are rotated and you might see something else entirely on each visit. If you go early they only charge half price. I was disappointed in their choice for pictures on posters sold as I felt they chose the craziest, work rather than the prettiest work, Some of the artwork looks like it could have been drawn by a first grader and some was truly outstanding. In all well presented, thought provoking and well done. No wifi, You have to put bags into lockers, there are clean bathrooms, staff was helpful and friendly
