The 3 Amigos

The 3 Amigos have offices on the main street in downtown Creel, Chihuahua. We offer bike and scooter rentals as well as horseback riding tours, and guided day hiking with a Raramuri Indian. We also offer bilingual guides in vehicle driven day tours and transfers in the Copper Canyon area. Amigo Trails is the only tour operator with offices inside the Canyons, located in Creel and an affiliate company that creates our complete vacation packages through the Copper Canyon. We are pleased to offer free information about the region for walk-in clients. Our offices are open from 9am to 5pm in the winter and 9am to 6pm in the summer, though sometimes we are closed on Sundays if is is a slow time of year, if we are already sold out via advance Reservations, or if we are short staffed.

These guys are highly professional guides and are very knowledgeable about the area. They can organise "self-cycling " - which we took around most of the Creel Sights. The bikes were in excellent condition and the maps (including commentary) were excellent. We also took one of the tours around various hidden parts of the Canyons. Gustavo, our guide made this one of the most enjoyable trips I've been on. I cannot praise this place enough.

Lake Arareco

The lake is nice but honestly it's not extraordinary, maybe if we had hiked around it it might've been more interesting. There are a tarahumara children selling handicrafts and/or asking for money. If you can bring fruit for them, it would be a nice gesture and you don't encourage begging.

We took a couple of tours with this family company, ECO Alternative Tours offer a very well informed commentary about the daily life of the Raramuri people and handle tourist interactions with the local people with respect towards the Raramuri hosts, the objective of the company, as explained to us by Chunel, the guide and owner, is to earn enough money to promote programmes to improve the lives of the local Raramuri people.
Chunel, a Raramuri himself, is very knowledgeable about how life is here, he can give you the social, political, cultural, economic and religious context in which the Raramuri battle for life, it was a bit too much to absorb at times, but I rather have more information than less, our chats left me hungry for learning more about this fascinating people.
Our conversations where straightforward and informative, sometimes even uncomfortable when we were confronted with the realities of living in this part of the world, but in my opinion a proper traveller, more than a tourist, would like to know more about the place and people visited, and on that regard this company delivers.
We took a couple of tours while in town, first "El Hechizo" which is a 3 hour ride visiting several points of interest in close proximity to Creel, this tour should be doable by people of all physical abilities and even if one can't walk much visitors will get a fair idea of what the surrounding areas have to offer, if you have little time in town I suggest this is tour is a must.
Next day we did the long (scheduled for 9 hours) "Kawii" tour, which takes you in a long trek into Raramuri country, this tour was physically demanding, it required a lot of walking ( I think we did close to 18km) with some easy but nevertheless tricky at times climbing, we should have carried more water with us, be more mindful about the very strong sun (the air is very clean and we didn't take that into account) and have some energy rich food (a couple of energy gels or any other carb rich food would have sufficed), although there was a lovely meal with a Raramuri host family half way of our trip I think we should have had some extra food.
We are middle aged and relatively fit ( I had run 2x10km races the previous month and my wife does triathlons) and found the tour demanding, I say this not to deter others but to make sure you are prepared so your experience is more enjoyable.
The tour was a one big WOW after the other, absolutely fantastic views from start to finish, here one can truly appreciate the beauty of the canyon, get glimpses about how the locals live and enjoy as much fresh air as your lungs can get.
Chunel, guiding us for this tour as well, is an excellent walker, so don't be shy to ask for help or for a stop whenever you need them.
The highlight of the tour was most definitively our stop half way with a Raramuri family, we ate what they would normally eat (most likely you will be treated to delicious hand made tortillas, the best ones I have tasted for a long, long time) while contemplating the dramatic and beautiful landscape in which their humble home is located.
I rate the moment I was eating this simple food in that magnificent landscape as one of the most memorable experiences in my life, and as you may be able to see from my other reviews on this website, I have been around quite a bit.
This tour was offered in different lengths, but if you are relatively fit the longest one should be something most definitively for you, talk to your hosts first to evaluate what would suit best your level of physical fitness, I am pretty sure whatever tour you do with this lovely company you will be well served.

Pedro can not only arrange your el Chepe tickets (which are not the easiest to obtain in advance), but he will also pick you up from the station and is incredibly helpful with touring the copper canyon, offering various options depending on what you want to do. My favourite was going for a swim in the curasure Waterfalls.

We traveled as independent travelers, with arrangements made by this company. Everything went well, although it would be difficult to travel this route independently unless you at least speak traveler's spanish. if you do not, go with them on one of their tours. If you can get Christina as a guide, so much the better. She is great. This company does a very good job in handling logistics and arranging an enjoyable and interesting experience.
