My husband and I did the zip lines at night. You have to make a reservation but it was totally worth it. Zipping down the longest line and looking up to see the stars is such a great memory. The staff was personable and just very enjoyable.

Rotary Jail Museum and Tannenbaum Cultural Center

We’ve heard about this “top attraction” in Crawfordsville through the years and finally made time to visit on a nice fall afternoon. It’s an architectural/law enforcement curiosity that could be more interesting than it is. And that’s largely due to an indifferent staff. We spent a few minutes waiting in the foyer before anyone said anything. Then, it wasn’t a pleasant “hello” with a smile, but “did you sign in?” The young woman then took our $5/each admission and proceeded with a brief walk-through and listless commentary on a few rooms in the jailors home, then to the adjacent 3-story rotary jail itself. With some difficulty, she was able to hand crank the massive rotating cell structure, which is impressive engineering for the times. But there hasn’t been much effort (maybe not the resources) to do a historically accurate restoration or exhibits. On our visit there was a temporary exhibit of county law enforcement. Except for the John Dillinger death mask, it’s probably not very interesting for the general public. We’ve toured historic homes and similar sites with modest means, but where an enthusiastic, engaged guide can make you appreciate the history and feel welcome. That wasn’t the case this time.

Please allow at least 1 hour for a visit. No tours will be started after 4:15 Eastern. The Museum is CLOSED for tours on the fourth Saturday of August each year (August 25, 2018).

I'm a Civil War buff and the Lew Wallace Museum/Study was a must see. I was definitely not disappointed. The pre-tour film depicting the General's amazing accomplishments is very well done and quite informative. The study, designed by Wallace based on his world travels, is a treasure trove of his incredible accomplishments. And the young lady who provided the tour was both cordial and a genuine subject-matter expert. Whether a Civil War enthusiast, fan of the classics (author of Ben-Hur) or admirer of great Americans, this is a don't-miss experience.

In looking for something different to do over spring break, we decided to visit Ropkey Armor Museum. OMG! To see the variety of tanks and vehicles along with the many other military items he has, it really put things into perspective. I had no idea how huge some of the tanks were! My children enjoyed climbing into many of the vehicles while I just walked around in awe of what these tanks were capable of doing. There is no admission fee, but donations are requested. We are already talking about when we can return.

We’ve passed this museum (an old Carnegie Library) right on US231 many times, and finally visited on a recommendation from the visitor information center. The young woman at the entrance was knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. She was enthusiastic about local history and was able to answer questions about some of the people featured in the displays, local personalities including an astronaut, a cartoonist, and a fashion celebrity. They also have changing exhibits that this time included a display of quilts and memorabilia from area high schools that disappeared due to consolidation.

We’ve visited Crawfordsville many times, but never stopped for information about attractions. This 2-story brick home serves as the visitor information center and is located near the Lane Place, one of the main attractions in Montgomery County. The two young women working this Friday afternoon were knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. On their recommendation we visited the Carnegie Museum, and we’re glad we did.

Coal Creek Cellars

Pros: Ambience, free tastings, canine mascot with great background story, free sweets and snacks.
Cons: While they say they offer sweet wines, they really do not. They were dry and completely unappealing. Also, the female pourer talked entirely too much and she keot repeating herself. We waited until she stepped away for a cigarette and then slipped out, We make frequent road trips to visit different wineries and there has never been an occasion where we did not buy at least one bottle, until visiting this establishment. There were several people seeming to be enjoying themselves, however, so perhaps if you are a dry wine fan, you would have a different opinion. For us, all the " add ons" did not make up for the lack of taste. *** Also, they did not answer their phone line until 20 minutes past posted open time.***
