During covid, we visited this rotary jail. What an awesome place. Only $5 (call for a reservation) and got an amazing tour. We saw the sheriffs house and then went inside the prison. We even saw it rotate. Super great history! It was the first rotary jail built and the only one still around.

The General Lew Wallace Study and Museum, a National Historic Landmark and 2008 winner of the National Medal for Museum Service, features General Wallace’s personal Study, a unique building situated on over 3.5 acres of park-like land; his 1870 Carriage House, now an interpretive center and exhibit hall; and original memorabilia from throughout his life and career as a soldier, statesman, and the celebrated author of Ben-Hur, the best selling novel of the 19th century. This museum is not ideal for children under the age of 8. Please allow at least 1 hour for a visit. No tours will be started after 4:15 Eastern.

This site celebrates a man whose talents extended to an almost ridiculous range of areas. The site comprises the walled grounds, themselves a free garden of peace and delight, a small visitor center and Lew Wallace's study, the centerpiece of the site. "Study" does not begin to do justice to this building. Lew Wallace was successful as a lawyer, soldier, diplomat and author, along with being enough of a self-taught amateur architect to design this three-story building. The sites collection of artifacts reflects all these areas of accomplishment. The tour itself cost $7.00 per adult and begins with a film in the visitor center. The film serves as a decent introduction to Lew Wallace. The tour then proceeds to the Study, which took (2 adults) roughly an hour to see. There is so much in such a small space as to be overwhelming. Suffice it to say that those with an interest in Civil War history, post-Civil War New Mexico history (Wallace was territorial governor of New Mexico during the Lincoln County War), Ottoman Turkish history, and the book Ben-Hur (along with the movie versions of it) will have a productive and delightful time here. Dynamite comes in small packages and this place is dynamite. There is a small parking lot on-site and a decent amount of on-street parking immediately adjacent to the site. The Dari-Licious is only two blocks away for after-visit enjoyment. You can't beat this place for joy at a reasonable price.
