What to do and see in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

March 24, 2022 Kelli Reichel

With 35 miles of glorious coastline along Sardinia’s northern shore, Costa Smerelda (or Emerald Coast) was created as a getaway for the rich and famous by Prince Karin Aga Khan IV in the early 1960s. Sailing, waterskiing, scuba diving, golfing, shopping, fine dining and partying are some of the area’s best activities. Hotel prices can be exorbitant, but that’s no problem for the area’s wealthy visitors, even less so since many arrive in their own private yachts. Porto Cervo is the main town.

We were amazed to find that there is daily mass at 6 pm in this small town church, in the low tourist season of October. The faithful was very welcoming and friendly, and there is a group of (mainly) women who would gather for rosary before mass. So nice to see such a prayerful group of people.

Vigne Surrau

Vigne Surrau’s winery overlooks a property of more than 50 hectares of land covered by vineyards. The project interprets the winery as a workplace which transforms a product of the land through visible processes, which guarantee genuineness and quality. The architectural project is the result of a harmonious research between building and nature. The building in fact is realized by a sequence of transparent façades and local stone walls which melt with the land. Life in the winery is marked by the slow passing of time. A taste, a discovery, a new acquaintance: the best moments have an intense and persistent taste. Discovering tastes, perfumes and delicious news: food and wine specialties tell a story and invite our guests to taste them during the most appetizing events on the agenda. The Winery is hungry for culture: it’s always waiting for artists and people to share the beauty of an artwork in a natural, evocative and fascinating frame.

We had a driver take us all around northern Sardinia for a day and our lunch/wine stop was here. We were thirsty for wine and for a light lunch and this was a fabulous place to do both. They do a wonderful wine flight tasting and pair it with different breads, cheeses and meats. The ambiance is lovely with views overlooking the vineyards and the wines are all quite nice. They do a sparkler, whites, reds and a sticky. They do very little export so we brought a couple of bottles home to enjoy as we reminisce about our trip.
