This place is a well-hidden gem, but I assure you it’s worth the drive - which by the way takes you through lovely scenery with cork oaks, the odd wild donkey and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean. We are greeted by our guide for the hack, Ferdy, who speaks English, Dutch, Spanish and even German I think. I’ve brought my two daughters, an experienced 16-year-old and a novice 13-year-old. No problem - we are perfectly matched with calm and reliable horses, not at all slow, but dependable. The hack is fantastic, with great views and even a chance for my youngest to try a bit of trotting. Afterwards, we get to watch as the horses are released into the reserve and join their friends again, an image of happiness and freedom that is quite rare at the end of a hack in Spain. So highly recommended - I can guarantee you won’t regret it! PS: The mighty stallion rolling in the sand is another bonus!

Reflection on the Polo Valley experience We are a family of 4, with two teenage sons. None of us have ridden horses before. We wanted to find something new to share as a family and the Night trek with Polo Valley ticked all boxes. Tucked behind a dusty dirt road is an oasis of green fields, beautiful buildings, a lake and a level of customer drive second to none. Our bags were whisked off to our sleeping quarters and off we went to get our riding kit on. We met our horses and after a few minutes riding round the polo field, we set off. The ride is a wonderful mix of Andalucian countryside, with amazing views and some exciting water hazards. The horses were so well trained, they were calm and did whatever you directed them to do. The river is exciting, but I will let you find out yourselves! After a few hours riding, you arrive back to Polo Valley and arrive at a spectacular campsite, it is “glamping” rather than “camping”. Drinks and snacks are served to the table, which sits alongside a peaceful lake, with a roaring fire pit. It is a wonderful romantic space and also a great space to share as a family. As the evening progressed, drinks flowed and food was served. The food was a wonderful mix of vegetarian and BBQ food, so much that we could not finish it! We spent the evening star gazing, which was magical. When we woke, we found Breakfast had been laid out for us and we ate together as the sun rose, sipping warm coffee and cups of tea. Life is full of memories and this is one memory we will never forget!

Yeguada de la Cartuja

The most important reserve of Andalusian Horse, Carthusian lineage is located in the outskirts of Jerez de la Frontera. Visits are held every Saturday at 11.00. Guided tour + show in the main arena. Opened only Saturdays from March until November.

We booked the Saturday tour and show online and the price was very reasonable for what we experienced on the day. Location is not that good to find with a SAT NAV, so take your time to plan your route if you are driving there. If you have printed off your online ticket confirmations with your seat numbers on, you do not need to queue at the ticket office, go directly to the attraction entrance and show your booking confirmations. Once inside you will be split into groups according to your language. Our guide was Vicky who was excellent. The tour explains the history of the stud farm and day to day running. You will be able to stroke the horses, as they are very calm and friendly. The horses are clearly very well cared for by the staff. The show takes place in the second half of the visit and was very good. There are toilet facilities, a shop for souvenirs and refreshments are available. There is no cafe or restaurant. I would highly recommend this attraction.
