Frio Bat Flight Tours

Frio Cave is home to an estimated 10-12 million Mexican Free Tailed Bats. On scheduled evenings, from March thru September, guests meet with a guide who explains about the history of Frio Cave and the bats that call it home. Then, standing near the cave opening, they watch the bats fly out over their heads. Most evenings various birds of prey fly in to feast on the bats on the wing. Guest enjoy a Hill Country sunset as the streams of bats ribbon away into the distance. Tours end at dark.

The guide meets you at the entrance to the property and the cars drive in as a caravan for about 3 miles to the actual viewing area. I think it is worthwhile mentioning that there are no bathroom facilities. Once the bats start coming out it is truly spectacular. Some people brought their own chairs others sat in the nearby rock ledge while others just stood around. You can stay for however long you want. Some people started to leave after 30 minutes of watching the bats. We left after an hour. The guide was highly knowledgeable and answered all kinds of questions. If you are a birdwatcher you will also enjoy the Cave Swallows trying not to get in the way of the bats and the occasional raptor ( we saw a Swainson's Hawk) snatching bats in mid-air. I would definitely return and try to get better pictures of the raptors next time.

Happy Hollow Frio River Outfitters

We stopped here to snag some swim gear before our Frio frolicking. Typical place of its kind, pricier than a discount store but expected prices. They offer tubing at fair prices, but we didn't do that as we were staying on private property nearby and had a reserved section of the river to play in. Maybe next time we will use their services.

Andy's on River Road

Reviewed By MelanieMcDo - Austin, Texas

we got great inner tubes, the bus ride was crowded with all of our family, but it was fast and we got in the river quickly, rode a couple of hours and ended up back at the same place, no figuring out how to get back to where your car is! The inside shop was crowded with many fun seekers and only two women working the registers. They could have used another helper as many people buy the gear and souvenirs there. I would recommend wearing a lot of sunscreen and get the float for your ice chest and take cold drinks along. We were ages 7 to 72 !!!

Frio Cave

Tourists come to this cave at sunset to see the thousands of bats who live there as they fly out for the night.

Reviewed By panamaboutique - Austin

We travel all over the place to find the unique, but sometimes it's right there, at home. Barbara has relocated to the Hill Country of Texas and on a recent weekend we went to the bat cave outside Concan, a small town on the Rio Frio. The bat cave is open for guided viewing most evenings in the summer. Some 10-12 million Mexico free-tailed bats migrate from Mexico for the spring and summer, and they have been coming to this same cave for decades. It's a maternity colony, they come to give birth, one pup each, so in August, the group is even larger. They are here until the first cold weather, and they take off back to Mexico. It is the second largest bat population in the world, but the largest one open for the public to view. Really, this is an awesome experience.

Just before sunset, the bats emerge from the cave as they head out for dinner. Weather, good and bad, will affect the departure time. Our guide, Bain Walker of Frio Bat Flights, gives a good general background on bats, the cave, local history. Depending on the emergence time, Bain tells more stories, takes questions, and you wait. On the night we were there, the bats were pretty much on time. As you peer into the cave, you see a whirring, then one bat flies out. This is a scout. Suddenly thousands then millions rush out of the cave in what looks like streams of smoke. They fly over our heads but just barely. The sound is almost silent with a light flapping of wings. Hawks are waiting to catch their own dinner and sometimes you see the hawk strike, then race off. The emergence takes up to an hour, but most folks leave after about 30 minutes, as the sun drops. Walking down the hill to our car, the bats were still streaming out, and some were lower to the ground, flying through bushes, just past us and almost bumping our elbows. You feel a quick whoosh of wind as they speed by.

Our group of 10 had lunch on the covered patio. There was only one person working the counter so it took a while to place our orders (mostly sandwiches and light fare with chips) and just as long to be served. There were plenty of ceiling fans, but it was still hot. The view of the golf course was lovely. My chicken tacos were decent.
If it's summer - eat inside.

Joe Jimmy's

Reviewed By BenH989 - Houston, Texas

While staying at Neal's Lodges you have free access to Joe Jimmy's Cantina. It's styled like an ice house with plenty of pic-nick tables to sit out and enjoy some live music. There is a pretty good sized concrete dance floor to do some boot scootin' in your flip flops. On the weekends they have live bands that mostly play cover music but it's still enjoyable to dance under the Hill Country nights. There is a bar that is well stocked for whatever your heart desires. There are also arcade games, pool tables, a swing set, and an open pasture for the kids to run around in. It's a nice way to sit back and relax outside after those long days on the river.

Neal's Lodges

Reviewed By Rpd645 - Grandview, Texas

We decided to try Neal's for renting tubes. First of all, you enter a fairly large store but no one is there to greet you or point you in the right direction. After looking around at a large variety of Neal's paraphernalia, we found someone at the back counter. He immediately told us to go to the teenage girl in the front, who said nothing as we walked by initially. Long story short, quick rental - 3 tubes for $30 (with or without bottoms, same price), then $15 (3 x $5) for the 5 minute shuttle ride. They drop you off depending on the "3 hour or 6 hour" float. We chose the 3 hour and it was plenty long. They have tubes for coolers if needed. Lots of dogs seen enjoying the tubes and swimming. Very kid/pet friendly. Once the float was over, we walked up a hill to Neal's and returned the floats. Quick and painless. My daughter and I attempted to use the restroom, which is located out back and around a corner....for a reason. We didn't even make it through the door and the smell of urine was worse than an old folks' home. I'm not sure they wash the floors but if they do, it can't be with clean water/mops.
