Royal Palace of Madrid

Luxurious, over-the-top rococo palace with over 2,000 opulently gilded rooms.

Reviewed By WizWiz - England, United Kingdom

The excellent audio guide was sufficient for exploring the palace without a guided tour The Palace was really impressive, the view from the Scenic viewpoint was breathtaking and the works of art inside were very antique and impressive; do make sure you include a visit to the armoury. Overall, the sheer splendour of the palace was breathtaking, every one of the rooms exquisite, and particularly the magnificent Throne Room. Well worth a visit

Museo Cerralbo

Reviewed By hilarionmartinez

Just got back from Madrid and have to share the pics I took at what I believe is Madrid’s BEST House Museum. The Museum Cerralbo houses the art and historical object collections of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo, who died in 1922. The mansion was built in the 19th century, according to Italian taste, and is luxuriously decorated with baroque furniture, wall paintings and in my opinion the best chandeliers I’ve seen anywhere. If you like beautiful chandeliers do not miss it. It is near the Plaza de España Metro. The home retains its original aesthetics; the grand staircase will leave you breathless. It features an interesting collection of paintings, archaeology and furniture, including works by Jacopo Tintoretto, Jacopo Palma the Younger, El Greco, Ludovico Carracci, Alonso Cano, Zurbarán, Luis Paret and many more. This palace is my favorite home to visit in Madrid in that you see a great collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts and experience what life was like for one of Madrid’s aristocratic families. It is SPECTACULAR!

Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Reviewed By tizS_11 - Rome, Italy

I took the bus 661from Moncloa Bus Terminal, and then walked 3’ to El Escorial, and entered at 10am when it opened. The place got VERY crowded so I was glad I came early. I rented the audio guide, clicked the option “3-hour audio guide extended tour” with the most perfect itinerary and excellent description of everything. You will visit: -the amazing library -the impressive church (Renaissance artists from Italy such as Federico Zuccari and Pellegrino Tibaldi were hired to decorate its interior, and there is even a marble crucifix by Cellini!) -the main cloister with the famous paining on the ceiling by Luca Giordano with the “Triumph of the Habsburgs,” the collection of paintings in the “capitular chamber” (Titian, El Greco, etc.) -the royal apartments (where the famous Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch used to hang together with some other 20 paintings by Bosch) -the mausolea with the royal tombs (including the tomb of Philip II and Charles V) -the hall of battles -the Bourbon apartments with an amazing collection of tapestries (the products of Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid that you must visit!), -and the gardens. I took beautiful photos of the exterior of the Escorial. No photos allowed inside! You will explore the history of Spain’s Golden Age under the powerful Philip II, also known as “the Prudent.” He has great artistic taste and was the most influential ruler of the world during the Counter-Reformation. After or before the visit do not forget to have some Spanish food in the nearby “Tan Ricamente” as the ladies there cook themselves and it seems like eating at home.

Castillo de Manzanares el Real

Reviewed By 275DavidW - Paignton, United Kingdom

The castle is located in the small town of Manzanares el Real which is about a 45-minute bus journey outside Madrid. We came across the castle a few years ago by visiting an old family friend who lives in the town. The day we visited the castle it was very quiet on a Saturday arriving just after lunch and we spent around 4 hours in castle. I’m sure if visitors to Madrid were aware of the castle it would be a lot busier but maybe that is a good thing as we didn’t experience the crowds like we did while visiting some of the well-known tourist attractions and was a little cooler than Madrid with a nice breeze. The castle is on about 4 or 5 levels with several state rooms and balconies on each level overlooking the castle courtyard. Once at the top we had excellent views over the Reservoir of Manzanares el Real from the one side and views of the mountains and town on the other sides.

Very nice easy going place, even in the middle of February! Plenty of restaurants to eat the delicious suckling pig of the area, nice terraces for a glass of wine or coffee.
