Textile Heritage Trail

Reviewed By Beth B - Ridgeway, Virginia

Fieldale is a very cute little community and this trail is just around the corner from the city park, which has a very neat old iron bridge, and just down the hill from the downtown area. There is good parking at the trail head and there is another trail just across the road that winds along Smith River. The Textile Heritage Trail is mostly crushed granite trail but there's a little boardwalk too. There are six panels along the trail that tell the history of the textile industry in the area. Since most of the big companies that came into the area in the beginning have been lost, the story is a little depressing but there is no rule saying that you have to read the placards. The trail itself if very pretty and winds back and forth through the woods.I think that people who like outdoor trails will really like this one.

There were nice displays of dinosaurs and other critters found in Virginia. Plus you could also observe labs for paleontology and archaeology. My favorite displays were in the "Uncovering Virginia" gallery. The Grundy and Saltville exhibits were most interesting to me. Saw other families visiting and a number of children in the classrooms who were having fun.

Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail

Reviewed By Beth B - Ridgeway, Virginia

The Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail is a 4.5 mile long trail that runs through Martinsville, VA, and has two spur trails: the Silverbell Trail will take you up to the Piedmont Arts on Starling Avenue and the Uptown Connection Trail that will bring you up to Uptown and the Heritage Museum. It is an asphalt trail, reasonably level, and very beautiful. There are free little libraries and art work peppered along the trail, as well as marked and unmarked sites of interest, like DeShazo's Silo (marked on the Uptown Connection Trail) and an abandoned tressel with a grain spout (unmarked on the main part of the trail). There is a stream that runs beside the trail and it is heavily wooded so it is a great fall trip when the leaves are changing. Highly recommend getting one of the free bikes at the Bike Barn on the Doyle Street trailhead to ride the trail. Check the Henry County Bike Club website for current seasonal hours on the Bike Barn.

Mountain Laurel Trails

Reviewed By Beth B - Ridgeway, Virginia

Mountain Laurel Trails are primarily mountain biking trails. They have signs posted that it is mixed use also for pedestrians and equestrians and it's great for that but the focus is really for mountain bicyclists. It is also in the small community of Horsepasture rather than Ridgeway (everything in these parts is called Ridgeway because they are serviced by the Ridgeway post office).
We went out to walk the trails, see what's there, and catch some pretty photos if we could. The trails are really nice and there are a lot of them - many, many more miles of path than we could reasonably see on foot.
Check their Facebook page for events before heading out. They often have group rides and I've seen at least one organized trail run held out there. There is no fee to enter. You must bring your own gear. This is really woodsy. Wear bright colors during hunting season (Oct to Jan).

The staff here are very knowledgeable and friendly. If you will share your interests/hobbies with them, they will point you in the correct direction for events and places that mesh with your interests. Their displays change regularly and are almost a history lesson of businesses in the area. The NASCAR racing displays are my favorite.

We recently hosted a German exchange student and he really enjoyed their assistance in finding him places to go and things to do on the weekends. The restaurant coupons also came in handy.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor looking for local events....this is the place to go!
