Well, is part of the visit to Cochem and can´t miss it. It has this flavour of medieval cities well preserved, and is one of the hot spots of the area without any doubt. Amazing castle, amazing city center worth a visit of a day for sure, and if you fancy to stay at Cochem is plenty of hotels and restaurant to make your stay very nice. Looks touristic for us, but in a acceptable way, and a nice place to stay for the overall visit to the Mossel and Rhin river, Trier and Koblenz included.

A very interesting 60 minute tour in a bunker that was built built by the German Central Bank in the sixties in order to store 15 billion Deutsch Marks that were to be used in case the East Germans flooded West Germany with counterfeit Deutsch Marks. It was so secret that even the Stasi didn't know what the bunker was being used for.

Cochem is very touristy, though quaint in its own way. I was pushing my great aunt in a wheelchair, which was hard work of course. Wheelchair accessibility is generally a problem here as restaurant toilets are all either upstairs or downstairs. The solution for us was the public toilets under the old bridge, though the bumpy cobblestone ride needs to be taken before getting desperate for the loo !! That said, the actual Mosel Promenade was a lovel stroll with the wheelchair.

Cochem

Cochem is probably the centre of the Mosel valley, it certainly is the best town/city with the most going on, shops, restaurants, excursions etc, etc. There are plenty of hotels, pensions and guest houses and a camp site, it is also a stopping port for all the river cruise boats that go up and down the river each day, this means the town/city is very busy by day.
Cochem is a loverly place to stay and visit and because it is in the centre of the mosel a good place to base yourself when going on days out either by car, boat, bike, train, bus or walking, you can do it all here.
But be aware Cochem is not cheap, like most tourist places, prices are high weather it be food, drink, attractions or just buying an ice cream. We tried to work to a budget of €100 per day for two and this didnt include breakfast as that was included in our hotel, and we easily spent our budget.
Our visit was planned for the first week in September to try and miss the school holidays, sadly, I think we also missed the summer season for Cochem and the rest of the towns and villages up and down the river as a lot of places seemed to be winding down or closing early or just not open at all during the week, the weekend livened up a bit. Evening entertainment was difficult to find so after dinner you either headed for the bar or an early night.
Cochem is a nice place to visit, but be sure about what you want from your holiday, as this place may not suit all.

I was taken back with the emptiness of the walls, starkness of the main Church. (Yes, said a few prayers).
Then, appreciated the 3 stained Windows in the side altar.
Look at the photos here as they ate representative (no need to add).
Also, the independent Cross !!
Nice reprieve from the tourists outside!
