What to do and see in Coastal South Carolina, Coastal South Carolina: The Best Food & Drink

July 2, 2021 Matilde Konrad

Miles of white sand and romantic island resorts beckon from the hem of the Palmetto State. Families gravitate to Myrtle Beach and the 60-mile span of Grand Strand, where over 100 championship golf courses, tennis courts and nightclubs await. Charleston’s hundreds of heritage buildings, and irresistible charm, are part of its allure. Beach resorts at Kiawah Island, Seabrook and Edisto Island make for romantic getaways. Marshes, moss-bearded palms and oak groves create ambiance in the haunting Lowcountry.

They had bar food available but I just sampled the beer. I am a certified beer judge & home brewer. All beers were well made and the server was quite knowledgeable. THEY DID NOT OFFER FLIGHTS. This was disappointing as I would have liked to try more beers. They did have 6 oz pours but that was more beer than I wanted.

Each of us did the tasting offered and we enjoyed three mini cocktails each. The tasting room was stylish. We received shot glasses with our tasting. The cocktails were unique and we each liked all of what we ordered. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The complementary tour was interesting! The facility was sparkling clean and I feel like I know so much more about the process of making liquor. We would certainly visit again!

We checked to see what breweries are in Charleston and then checked their beer ratings on untapped. After seeing their high ratings we knew we had to visit. We met Adam the brew-master and were blown away by his quality of beers. We spent more time there than we had planned but the beers were so good we had to try more and different ones. We also purchased cans and crowlers to go which we traveled home with. If you are a craft beer lover you MUST visit Charles Towne Fermentory. Do not miss them!!!

Bluffton Farmers Market

This is a Thursday only event that hosts anything from local farmers selling fresh, produce, fruits, honey, baked goods as well as local restaurants selling samples from their store offerings. The setting is Old Town Bluffton with multiple old turn of the century homes from the historical society. It is a wonderful afternoon outing held from2pm to 7pm throught the summer season and only on Thursday's.

Bluffton is the coolest town, even though the long-time residents feel it's a different town than what they grew up in. But what town hasn't undergone change like that? And if you're that cool of a place, more people want to share in it. The Market is really great, with lots of vendors offering sublime treats, from the Georgia boys and their exquisite meats and eggs and etc, to the freshest produce that comes from nearby farms, to the to-die-for Paella husband and wife team and their saffron-infused bomba rice-based creations, to the Sprouts Momma's unbelievable bread and cookies and other treats, and on and on. And the guy who plays awesome finger style guitar is an added treat. Go there for a super lunch, then shop and drop some bucks on these wonderful folks who take such pride in their efforts and area.

We enjoyed an afternoon at Blind Tiger in downtown Charleston so learned about local breweries and got several recommendations. Lots to see & do in town and on islands & beaches, including Ft Sumpter tour, so we could only squeeze in a visit en route to the airport. Holy City is in a friendly industrial room with many choices and good food (the pretzels are sin-fully good!), so we enjoyed ourselves just a few minutes from CHS. It's the kind of place where you may not mind hearing about (another) flight delay. Cheers.

Our tour guide Stephanie was a delight! Yes we learned about the distilling process...but you can google that. The fun part was learning what this particular distillery does different from everyone else! Stephanie was fun and had great stories to tell us about the owners and the distillery. The tasting was great, the alcohol was tasty, and I left with two bottles of Whiskey! All in all, I highly recommend High Wire if you're looking for a distillery tour in Charleston.
