What to do and see in Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo Department: The Best Food & Drink

August 13, 2021 Merry Kessler

Montevideo, a port city and the capital of Uruguay, is a perfect destination for travelers looking for a relaxing stroll past colonial era buildings and along beautiful beaches. The Ciudadela Gateway, the only remaining section of the wall that once surrounded the entire city, now serves as the entrance to Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's oldest neighborhood. Home to churches, museums, and theaters, at night the area comes alive with nightclubs playing Tango and Candombe music for crowds of dancers.

If you are into wines and have some time come to Montevideo Wine Experience (MWE). I spent 6 nights in Montevideo before and after visiting several bodegas and each evening I came to MWE. So I can say I had lots of 'experience' at this fabulous wine bar. I hope you are lucky enough to meet Nico and Liber on your visit. If not Diego and Alesandro (Ales) will be very happy to serve you. They all speak English. It seems Thursday evening are live music night which can be very busy as the music at MWE is always excellent. I did two different tasting which were both paired with great cheese, meat and bread. If you enjoy good red wines but not sure what to order live it up and order Los Nadies 2011 Equilibrio made by Manuel Filgueira. MWE is just a great spot to hang out, enjoy the wines, meet very interesting people and then if you are still hungry go across the street to Es Mercat for a fabulous seafood dinner. Thank you guys at MWE for making my time in the capital city a special and unique experience.

Port of Call Montevideo

Hi, youre planning to visit Montevideo and are looking for tours. Well we arrived into the city by cruise ship and had a privete tour with bbq booked. This tour started at $135 usd, and worked its way down as the number of people going increased. Eventually we ended up at $96. Imagine my surprise when coming off the dock, there were cabs everywhere offering the same tour without bbq for $20 each for 4 persons. Then after getting into the mini bus doing up our seat belts, we moved about 250mtrs and we were at the first attraction, the 2nd was another 300mtrs. My suggestion to you is walk, or take a cab. You can buy a sensational meal for a out $20 a head in that city. Heres hoping that by us spending you can learn and save. Good touring everyone.
