The town's architecture is very Moorish, so this atmospheric bar with Moroccan day beds and flamenco tunes fits in nicely. The owners are very friendly and even provided a much-needed blanket on a chilly evening.

I Giardini di Pomona

The Botanical Conservatory "I Giardini di Pomona" works at preserving the biodiversity of different plant species, providing comfortable accommodations with low impact in beautiful surroundings at the center of Apulia, where the tree provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto meet. The 25 acres (10 hectars) of the Conservatory, devoted to organic farming, are located in Cisternino, the heart of the Itria Valley, also known as "The valley of the Trulli". The plant collection of Conservatory includes more than 800 antique fruit tree varieties. Among that, the collection of 560 fig tree species, one of the largest in the Mediterranean area, and the pomegranate collection with 45 varieties. In the center of the garden is hosted the famous Nagasaki Persimmon tree, surrounded by a beautiful lavender labyrinth. The agriturism "I Giardini di Pomona" offers hospitality in their renovated Trulli, which have been recently restaured with great care. The Conservatory I Giardini di Pomona can be visited upon appointment every day (by phone or email), the visit takes about 1.30 hours. Tastings and shopping of products and plants are possible.

WOW. Came here following the recommendation from Tripadvisor and was not disappointed! Would never have thought this kind of trip would've been this fulfilling (unless you don't care about plants or the ancient Romans, with whom many plants had some connection).
Paolo was absolutely fascinating: full of dreams/visions of a better tomorrow and a great passion for all things grown on the land. We had a very informative and interesting 2 hour tour of his property and through our interpreter, learned so much about various plants, not just the hundreds of fig varieties. We also enjoyed some of the fruit of the land, though much was not in season when we went. At the end of our tour, we bought a bunch of stuff to take home with us like dried fruit purée snacks (like fruit roll ups), fig syrup, linden flower tea, dried figs, etc.
The only thing I would note is that the Tripadvisor address (as some have already pointed out) is WAY off. We had to ask someone who lived in the general vicinity of Tripadvisor's address to get the actual location, which was somewhat further than you'd expect.
Make sure you get a translator if you don't understand Italian: you definitely won't get what the place is about just strolling around on your own. Our translator was a great investment... Happy exploring!

We were interested in learning more about olive oil and this mill was close to our villa. It is in a lovely setting, is family owned and offers a very informative tour. The best part is the tasting with about 10 oils to taste and compare. Of course you have the opportunity to buy their products - not only oil but cosmetics and creams too. Prices were reasonable compared to the U.S. so we bought a bottle, which they vacuum sealed for us to take home in our checked luggage.

Chiesa Matrice di San Nicola Patara

The church of San Nicola is the mother church of the town of Cisternino. It has a very simple and pleasing Romanesque interior. It also has two unusual and beautiful side chapels at the right. The second is a fine chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. On the wall between the two is a wonderful piece of sculpture by local superstar sculptor Stefano da Putignano. It is a 1517 stone statue of the Madonna and Child.

Red Water

Reviewed By Seba2009 - Cisternino, Italy
