Sati Anusuya Temple

Reviewed By cp_0010 - Manama, Bahrain

Sati Anusuya Ashram/temple is located about 18 km from Ramghat. it is a famous religious attraction in Chitrakoot for the Hindus and is regarded as one of the holiest places in the region. This place gets the importance from the fact that it served as an ashram to Maharishi Atreya who stayed along with his wife Anasuya. The ashram is dedicated to Sati Anusuya with pictures of her life and also has idols of her hsuband Atreya and son Dattatreya. Anusuya is regarded as one of the mahasatis in holy scriptures of Hinduism because of her devout, pure and chaste character. There are many stories linked to her and one of them is linked with Chitrakoot. It is believed that once upon a time, this region had no rains for many years. Then Sati Anasuya performed hard penance and brought River Mandakini down on earth that flows along side the temple and in many parts of Chitrakoot and also in Ram ghat. It is believed that Sita sought Sati Anusuya's blessings during her exile and it is believed that Ram stayed in Chitrakoot for 11 1/2 years. Anusuya was called Sati for her sacrifice, penance, her dedication and love towards her husband. Another story linked to her is that once Gods Brahma, Vishnu & Shiv came to test her and were converted in small childs by her due to the powers of her devout character & chaste. Upon requests of Goddesses Parvati, Lakshmi & saraswati, Anusuya returned their husbands to them. The road leading to the ashram is not very well maintained. We had Innova car that took us to the temple and its is advisable to hire a local guide to show all nearby places which will be time saving. The ashram is located on a height and is surrounded by trees and hills on all sides. Offerings are given to Sati Anusuya in the form of saree which is given back by the priest after being offerred to her.
