Musee d'art Thomas-Henry

Reviewed By Akumuk - Paignton, United Kingdom

This difficult to find museum shares a building with the main library. It is modern and has many good exhibits. The paintings cover a wide range of genres and there are some excellent sculptures. The entrance fee of 5 euros seems expensive at first but once you get to the second floor the gallery is very large. The galleries are well laid out and explanations are clear both in English and French. Not all the paintings are translated into English, but they are still worth viewing. Some of the marine art is exceptional. Sadly the most modern exhibit, Cherbourg today, is not translated.

Cite de La Mare

Come and visit La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg, a family attraction all about man’s adventures under the sea, and a must when you are in Normandy. You can spend the whole day here and go round “Titanic, return to Cherbourg”, an exhibition which has its like nowhere else in France. It is on the theme of the celebrated liner, but also on emigration. You will also be able to listen to the Captain of Le Redoutable telling you about his life on board the largest submarine open to the public in the world. Then you will gaze in awe at our 17 aquariums, including the magical, 11-metre-deep, Abyssal Aquarium.

We stopped off on a cruise. The museum was right next to the cruise terminal and worth every euro. The Titanic exhibition was particularly good as was the nuclear submarine.

Basilique Sainte-Trinite

Reviewed By Akumuk - Paignton, United Kingdom

This church has a unique splendour which can only be appreciated by going inside. The outside demonstrates a very varied architectural style, including flying buttresses, gargoyles and normal arches as well as modern refurbishments. Inside it is a haven of peace and simplicity. This contrasts with its beautiful stained-glass windows, both old and modern, and the extraordinary painted columns and pillars. Whilst these have faded with age it takes very little to recognise what vibrant colours they must have been painted with when created over a century ago. Make the effort to visit this quiet sanctuary, it is worth the time. Sadly there are no English explanations in the Basilica.
