Storytrails

Story-based walking tours and short excursions that zig-zag through the beat and the pulse of the city; from its oldest parts to its busy bazaars, through dance and art to its rural heart. Unlike sight-seeing tours, these trails focus on the everyday sights on the streets - the local customs, symbolisms and the fascinating stories behind the mundane rituals of life. Hosted by a team of articulate storytellers, these trails are an enjoyable way for visitors to appreciate the local way of life. Pick from nine different tours in Chennai.

This was my first ride with Date a bike group and it most definitely was a fun-filled and memorable one. The ride was through the most scenic roads. The team took every effort to ensure the riders are feeling comfortable throughout the ride and helped us all with our everyday bike inspections. Couldn't have asked more for the first ride! Special thanks to Vikram, Girish and Rads for arranging the best stays in all places. Looking forward to the next time with them!

Cook With SundariKrishna

Continuous interaction with a number of International visitors to Chennai, India during the last few years, has encouraged me to provide a platform where guests are not only in a position to enjoy the nuances of Indian fine dining but further learn the art of cooking depending on their interest. The guests can choose from a variety of menu lists which will be provided through email on booking. I also teach Ayurveda and Vegan recipes

Walking into SundariKrishna's house is like walking into a warm hug. I went to a private cooking class and came out with so much knowledge about traditional south indian food and culture, not to mention some great new skills that I've been trying out back home! There were so many options for food and I got to try some vegetables and spices that I've never tried before. I attended the class on Diwali and was so accommodated and spent the evening eating the food we had prepared and enjoying the company. This was such a unique and amazing experience, I highly recommend this for couples, families and solo travellers alike

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

This ancient shrine to Shiva is centrally located and among the area’s most popular landmarks.

This temple is in the heart of the Mylapore area.. it has a wide temple tank . There are flower shops in the entrance of the temple main entrance. Free shoe stand is also provided for the devotees. When you enter you could have Darshan of Lord vinayaga. Main deity Kalaleeswarar is seen facing west and hence this temple is considered to be " Sarva dosha Nivarana sthalam".. Ambal sannithi is very vibrational and you could find a chillness when you are inside the sannithi .. Do visit this temple..

Mylapore

If you are looking to soak in the culture of Chennai, the Mylapore Tank and Mandavali area should be at the top of your list. One of the oldest residential parts of Chennai, the tank is a part of the seventh century Kapaleeshwarar Temple. This is also the place where the famous Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar, was born. If you are spending a few days in Chennai, you will understand the importance of this state figure from the number of references made in signs, names of shops and statues. The quintessential travel phrase, "overwhelming sights, sounds, smells," fits perfectly in this area. The narrow streets around the temple are buzzing with activities. Flower sellers, archaic shops selling temple offering ingredients and such line the roads leading to the temple. A photographer’s dream, this place is best explored in the morning, the chosen time to pay homage at the temple.

Mylapore is an area with rich history and heritrage of Chennai. This is an area where there are multiple temples, eateries open since many decades and places where traditions even today mean a lot. The rich heritage and traditions do come alive even more during festival times.

DakshinaChitra Museum

A unique concept of bringing South India’s cultural traditions all under one roof, Dakshin Chitra is a little out of the city (25 kilometers) but certainly worth your while. Dakshin Chitra actually means "picture of the south" and that’s exactly what you should expect to see. Educational and fun at the same time, this is a center for a complete orientation to Southern India’s four states. You can experience the living traditions, performing arts, music, crafts and architecture on the 10-acre spread. The earthy feel of the structure and its surroundings transport visitors into the cultural milieu. Dakshin Chitra is great for both children and adults as you can try your hand at glass blowing, pottery and traditional games.

Reviewed By michaelmT5130SC - The Hague, The Netherlands

On an historical trip through South India we visited Dakshina Chitra. It was a real joy to experience this beautiful collection of antique houses from all four southern-Indian states. The signs in English are informative. There were demonstrations of weaving, pottery, henna application, dances and painting in the various regional styles. There is a good film illustrating the way people lived in the recent past. The shop has a well stocked selection of handcrafted objects and there is a bazaar where you can buy directly from the artists who demonstrate their craft for you. The restaurant serves authentic South Indian food and is reasonably priced. Its strength is highlighting Hindu, Christian and Muslim heritage. There are activities for kids like colouring, shell decorations, handicraft etc. In the evenings there are sometimes excellent dance performances in the amphitheatre. Ample parking space.
