We stopped at Manousakis Winery during our drive from Kissamos to Chania. We were looking for a winery open on a Sunday and they were, thankfully. Reservations weren’t needed for tasting. We were promptly sat and chose the premium tasting which consisted of 7 wines: 3 whites, 1 rose, and 3 reds. All were great but the whites were the standouts and we took a few with us. Beautiful setting, great informative service, plus olive oil and salt for sale...this is a must if you’re looking for a rest stop while driving in northwestern Crete.

Visiting the Anoskeli Winery was a great experience in many ways: - first of all the staff are very friendly, and they take you on a tour around their premises showing you how they produced the olive-oil rated "Best in the World"! Furthermore they take through the exiting process of utilising every "aspect" of the olive, whether it's for soap, oil, or fuel. After this we attended their wine-tasting with good stories, and a great "in-between-meal" consisting of local products. The afternoon ended up in us investing in both olive oil and a few bottles of wine - extremely recommendable - THANK YOU!

We opted for the mid range 4 wine option. We learned a lot in the hour or so about tasting in general and spcifically about what makes Cretan wines unique. An informative and structured session that is well worthwhile. It may be too directive for experienced wine tasters and so finding out the level of experience of the guests at the begining may enhance Maria's very knowledgable presentation. Highly recommended.

Mavres Winery

We visited here as part of an organised tour (Organised by GT Travel in Kalyves who themselves deserve great praise). On arrival there was a very friendly greeting from Sifis (the owner) and Dimitria who was to be our guide for the visit. We were sat at tables and jugs of Tsigoudia (Raki) and Rakomelo (Honey Raki), which are made on the premises, were brought out for us to try. The schedule for the day was explained and we were then taken on a walking tour of some of the vineyard, where grape picking was just coming to a conclusion and we were able to taste some of the grapes. We then returned to the winery and were shown the various stages of wine and raki making and were able to sample some of work in progress. Dimitria was very knowlegeable and answered many questions about the winery. Subsequently we sat back at tables to start our wine tasting. We were to taste 6 different wines. At the same time masses of food was brought out for us to eat. At the end of the original tasting and when the food was finished Sifis seemed to be in a very good mood and many more bottles of wine kept coming out to be tasted, at least 10 different wines tasted by the end. It's difficult to say what was the best part, it was all so good. An excellent visit and, for us, excellent value. Leigh aka Manousos
