There are over 60,000 Poinsettias at this nursery with over 30 varieties. They also have Cyclamens and many gift arrangements. It really is a beautiful site to walk into the nursery and see all the beautiful colors and varieties. The staff is very helpful and friendly and they have cookies and cider to enjoy.
Beware, last year they sold out 2 weeks before Christmas so the sooner you get there the better your choices.

Carnegie Arts Center

The historic Carnegie Library opened in 1916, and following a renovation and expansion project in 2011 is now one of only a handful of professional art centers in the Central Valley region. The Carnegie's programs include museum-quality art exhibitions, educational classes and programs, lectures, and activities in artistic genres as diverse as dance, music, theater and more. At least 25% of all programming is dedicated to children and teens. operated by the Carnegie Arts Center Foundation, the center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.

During a weekend getaway to California's Central Valley to explore small towns and their museums, we stopped at the Carnegie Arts Center. Located just a few blocks from downtown Turlock, the museum features two floors of rotating exhibits. It is open most Wednesdays through Sundays and admission varies for each exhibit. When we visited, it was only $5 per person.

When we were first visiting the museum in March, there were 2 exhibits. The first one, titled "Valley Grown," showcased the work of John Karl Claes, Alexander Cheves, and Jody Sears Barbuta. There was a wide variety of media, ranging from sculptures to oil paintings, and we enjoyed all the art. Each piece explored elements of the Central Valley "experience," from the agricultural landscape to small, quaint towns in rural America. We visited on a Sunday morning and were the only people viewing the exhibit, which added to the serenity of the art-viewing experience.

In the second exhibit, "The Rebirth of the Muse," artists explored what inspired them, thus creating varying styles of art. We liked the art and particularly enjoyed reading the artists' statements to understand what the images in the art symbolized. Two months later, we called to purchase a piece of art that we had seen in this exhibit and drove back out to Turlock to pick it up.

We looked through the new exhibit that we hadn't seen during our first visit. The exhibit, the Central California Art Showcase, displays 162 juried entries, which are split evenly between the Carnegie Arts Center and the Mistlin Gallery in Modesto. Visitors can vote for which piece they like the best, which we liked participating in. There are photographs of nature and objects found in cities, sculptures, and paintings, and we enjoyed seeing such an assortment of art. The exhibit runs through Friday, June 2.

Overall, we really enjoyed visiting the Carnegie Arts Center and its interesting exhibits. The galleries are relatively quiet, you can interact with the art, and many of the pieces are for sale at a very reasonable price. If you are ever visiting downtown Turlock or the surrounding area, be sure to stop by the Carnegie Arts Center!

The State Theatre

Reviewed By Jeff N - Oakdale, California, United States

This is a charming, clean, comfortable, little theatre from long ago that has been thoroughly restored and finally has a good sound system.

Personally, I wish a larger theatre in this area had been saved, like the Strand in Modesto, the Alhambra in Sacramento, The Fox in San Francisco... Even if The Tower Theatre in Sacramento was restored it would have a 70MM Screen.

The problem with The State is that the only really good seat is in the middle of the first row of the balcony, because only the balcony has stadium seating, but if you even sit in just the second or third row of the balcony you will feel like you are a mile from the screen. They know this and want to install a much larger screen some day, but for now, that's it.

If I think of something else later that I want to add to this, or a better way of writing something I will NOT be able to, because this site does NOT allow edits. This is, of course, the most ridiculous thing on any site, so I hardly ever write reviews on it any more.

Hughson Historical Society

Reviewed By TravelFamily2015 - San Carlos, California

We love visiting small towns and exploring their history museums, so during a weekend getaway to California's Central Valley, we stopped in Hughson and visited the Hughson Historical Society. To ensure that the museum would be open on the day we were visiting, we contacted the Hughson City Hall (we couldn't find any contact information on the museum's Facebook page) and received the number of the President of the museum, Doris. She was very nice and was happy to open up the museum for us.

The museum is located in downtown Hughson at the corner of Hughson Avenue and Charles Street. Doris told us that they had just ordered a sign to display outside the building, to make it easier for visitors to find them. Inside the museum is a large room filled with pictures, artifacts, and newspaper articles all related to the history of Hughson. You can spend at least an hour reading through all the text and looking at all the photographs.

Though Hughson is the newest city in Stanislaus County, it has a long and unique history—and many 100-year-old buildings! The museum featured information about how the town was named. Hiram Hughson came to California at age 17 and, after a few years of working an assortment of jobs, he purchased 1,000 acres in what is today Hughson. Gradually, he bought even more land to grow grain, until he had between 2,000 and 5,000 acres. When the railroad put tracks across his land, the station was known as the Hughson stop. The name was never changed when the city was formed. At the time of Hughson's death, his reported worth was over $1,000,000, invested in land, mortgages, and securities. He had become one of the wealthiest men in the San Joaquin Valley.

The museum included a wide range of unique items, from signs and cheerleader clothing from Hughson High School to old matchboxes with local advertising. We learned that Hughson is the "Peaches and Cream Capital of the World," and viewed historic photographs and farming-related items. In addition, Doris told us stories and more information that made the displays really come alive.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Hughson Historical Society. It's a well-organized museum and Doris was extremely kind and generous. If you live anywhere near Hughson and want to learn about the town's unique history, be sure to stop by the Hughson Historical Society. We would suggest calling ahead first to schedule an appointment. The displays are interesting, and, above all, the museum volunteers are very helpful. Doris made us feel welcome and told us a lot about the area and its history. It's an excellent museum!

Take a few minutes to consider history as a learning tool. Sometimes we think of the past as the good old days. But usually that is somewhat short of true. Go to museum with the kids and learn.
