Rode the St. Charles streetcars from the French Quarter through the beautiful Garden District of Bee Orleans.... then a great breakfast at The Camellia Grill (the best!) and then back around!! Tip: get the day pass and use as often as you want!

There are two kinds of travelers in the world. Those who rush to get to their destination and those who see the traveling itself as part of the trip. If you ae in a hurry, AMTRAK is not for you. It will take a minimum of 19 hours to get to New Orleans from Chicago. The ride is a little rocky at times and depending on whether you are in a sleeper or coach, the level of comfort will be different. The food quality on AMTRAK has declined to the point that you get a microwaved meal at pretty high prices. The silver lining is that you can bring your own food and drink aboard the train. The train has a wide open observation car with comfortable seating that allows you to watch the world go by. There are also restaurant style booths at one end complete with tables. Downstairs in the observation car, the cafe counter is usually found. Coffee, tea, hot dogs...etc. are easy to access. As you travel southward, the cotton fields, swamps, and trees filled with Spanish moss become prevalent. Small communities in Mississippi are pockmarked with crumbling houses, scrap yards, and squalor amidst the natural beauty of the area. That, is part of the charm to be found when traveling by train. A trip which takes you through the backyards of America. There are places you will never see from the air or highway. Another great advantage to train travel is its relaxed pace. You will arrive at your destination without having had to face long airport security lines, crunched seating, or traffic jams on the highway. So...if you have the time and are interested in the natural beauty of this country, train travel is the way to go.
