What to do and see in Central Bohemian Region, Bohemia: The Best City Tours

December 31, 2021 Rebbecca Marino

The Central Bohemian Region (Czech: Středočeský kraj) is an administrative unit (Czech: kraj) of the Czech Republic, located in the central part of its historical region of Bohemia. Its administrative center is placed in the Czech capital Prague (Czech: Praha), which lies in the center of the region. The city is not, however, a part of it and creates a region of its own.

This was a fun way to see a lot of Prague from it's largest park. Great views and lots of picture-taking moments, and we never felt rushed. If you aren't going to be in Prague very long, this is a great way to feel you've seen a lot of it!

I've done the guided tour last week with Renata, who is an excellent guide, storyteller, Czech language teacher, and a very nice person. She gave us lots of background information, happily answered all our questions, remembered about the toilet breaks. The boat tour was a combination of getting more details about the buildings at the river banks and Vltava itself, opportunity to try a local snack as well as a perfect time to sit and rest and enjoy the view at the same time. Lunch was an excellent choice, a place visited mainly by Czechs with a great choice of local specialties. Walk through the royal gardens as well as all the stories of the cathedral was a cherry on the top. We had a great time and we will surely recommend this tour and Renata as a guide to all our friends. I deeply would like to praise Renata as a wonderful guide.

If you love the spiritual, the macabre, a place where stories are made, then you must visit The Ossuary at Sedlec, or The Bone Church of Kutna Hora. It’s one of those rare places that transcends expectations and leaves most visitors dumbstruck in the most glorious, soul-quenching way. It sits about an hour outside of Prague, and the only feature that advertises that there’s more than meets the eye to The Bone Church is the skull and crossbones spiked at the top of its spire. This tour guides you around the The Bone Church, and past another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Gothic cathedral of The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist. I'll illuminate you on the region's past, it's more recent history under the Soviet Union, and it's transformation into a parliamentary democracy. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Inclusions: Lifetime access to The Bone Church: Real and Imagined tour, VoiceMap Application, Offline access to audio, maps, and geodata

Exclusions: Smartphone, Transportation, Food/Drink, Tickets or entrance fees to any museums or other attractions en route

This tour would be great at night - going with friends listening (sharing earphones?). As I was alone and it is January (very chilly) - I wasn't going to wonder around listening to scary stories in the cold & dark. I didn't plan early enough to get a spot on a walking evening tour with good ratings - and the others sounds only so-so. In my last few hours in Prague I tried this out in the morning - and truly wish I'd done it when I first arrived. First, the narrator has a great voice for scary tales. Starting early morning (8:00 AM) it was still quiet enough to have a good eerie vibe in January. I have a gift for getting lost - but the layout of this tour is outstandingly easy to follow. You get to the starting place - and then the directions are amazing. The GPS interaction with the map layout worked perfectly... and the verbal direction made it so I only had to check my phone at all 2-3 times to make sure I was following the right path. I did have my phone out a lot taking photos - as the places it guided were extremely scenic. It was an amazing away to flawlessly navigate through awesome nooks, hidden squares, arches, and back pathways right in the center of it all. Would a great in person tour be better - probably. But for flexibility, path, quality, and cost - i'm giving this 5 stars.

The driver was so friendly and helpful and gave us a good overview of Czech history and places to visit. He even stopped on the way to the train station to take us to a viewpoint over the city where we could see the river and bridges and take some photos. When we got to the train station he carried our bags for us and took us to the booking desk where he helped to book tickets for our journey to Brno. He even waited to show us which platform the train would leave from. This was so much appreciated as I speak no Czech and was travelling with a young child. His English was perfect and manner was very friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend. This service exceeded all expectations. Thank you.
