What to do and see in Cat Island, Bahamas: The Best Places and Tips

December 8, 2017 Veronika Gaddis

Cat Island is simply ameowzing. Really, all puns aside. Legend has it that magical creatures inhabit the underground caverns of Mermaid Hole, and the ruins of Deveaux Mansion and Armbrister Plantation are breathtaking. A hike up to the Hermitage stone monastery on Mount Alvernia, the highest point in the Bahamas, will reward you with panoramic views. A guided tour of the island’s diverse creek systems is a must for nature lovers.

The Hermitage

A hike up 63-meter Mt. Alvernia to this small abbey will culminate in a panoramic view of Cat Island.

Looks a longer hike than what it is. In three parts. First is rocky. Divides into two paths. To the left is an easy slow rise and to the right is the original Father Jerome pathway. Third part of the Father Jerome way is step steps cut into the rock. The Hermitage is great and the view from there are wonderful

Cat Island Experience

Reviewed By rejuvenate - Manitoba, Canada

Can genuinely say we know of the "Cat Island Experience" company now, unlike the first review I did under this heading where I thought the title meant your actual experience on the island. I'd also included the "other" Danny King in that review, not realizing there are 2 on the island (one is Danny the car renter and gardener, the other Danson, and yes they're related)
Upon arrival at the Arthurs Town airport on departure day, we found out we'd be flying out of New Bight instead, and that we'd be taxied there by Danson King of C&O Taxi & Tours - while others were dismayed at this change in plans, we looked at it as a bonus, sitting up front we got a free guided tour along the way, with Danson answering all our questions, sharing his knowledge of the island. Very pleasant and friendly, we'll certainly look him up the next time we're in Cat Island.

We had so much fun at this cute, little, funky beach bar! The bartender and his wife always had an interesting story to tell about island life, great Beaches, etc. Dean and Patty were always helpful whenever we needed information about the island, directions, fishing, etc... Patty is an excellent cook and we truly enjoyed the laid back atmosphere at Da Pink Chicken! We met many people and truly enjoyed our afternoon drinks and dinners . Patty makes the best conch fritters we have ever had! They helped make our trip to Cat Island amazing....

We sailed, snorkeled, fished and relaxed aboard Destiny II, a modern, roomy catamaran with all the amenities to make our vacation comfortable. Dave is an expert sailor, as mentioned in other reviews. He also provides great entertainment when asked to sing and play guitar! The meals were well prepared, especially the fresh caught tuna and lobster. Be sure to visit Conception Island National Park to see the green turtles in Conception Creek. We have enjoyed two vacations on Destiny II and look forward to the next one.

Cocktails by the Sea

Cocktails by the Sea is owned by Grammy, an octogenarian native of Cat Island filled with great conversation. The location by the sea in quaint Arthur's Town is amazing, and the views are spectacular. There is a rooftop deck that is great for watching sunsets, and there is quite a bit of Seating right by the water so that you can also sit and enjoy your cocktail and the beautiful views. Grammy has a fully stocked bar and very cold Kaliks! This is a great place to grab a cold drink and strike up a conversation with Grammy and any locals that may be there. Don't miss it while you are out and about on Cat Island. Tell Grammy we said hello!

Took a half day trip out, and it was great. Nathaniel is very knowledgeable of the island and off his fishing. His main interest was that we caught something. The captain was also very nice and we felt very welcome on the boat. We caught one yellow fin tuna, and a black fin and also a barracuda. There was no rush and Nathaniel kept the lines going and definitely made it an awesome experience. Would recommend the trip. As they are both from the island they had great information on different things to go and see. When we got to shore he fillet both tuna so we could cook that night and they were so tasty. A trip not to be missed.
